Blood in dog's urine

I've see one or two threads regarding this, but am just wondering if anyone has any more insight.

A short time ago I took my dog out. He had been holding it for some time, and had quite a long pee. When we moved a little further on, he had another pee, and this time I notice a small amount of blood. He went again a little further on, and again there was a small amount of blood, but less this time. Anyway, we did the circuit around the block, and he went a few more times but there was no more blood.

He is behaving, eating and drinking normally, and having normal bowel movements. Besides the blood those two times, he's been peeing normally. He hasn't been injured, isn't actively bleeding, doesn't seem to be in any pain, and doesn't object to being touched or squeezed.

The only thing I can think of is that his urethra was irritated -- I've been at home but have been busy, and he's been hiding out of my sight in a cool room to escape the heat (again, normal behaviour), and didn't come to tell me he needed to go out, so he had been holding it for an unusually long time. I understand blood in the urine can also indicate a bladder infection, but he doesn't seem to have any of the other typical symptoms.

I called the vet, and was told to keep an eye on him and to take him in if it happens again, but am just wondering if anyone has any more insight.

........anybody?

He seems to be fine anyway. No more blood, at all his food, charged around the park as madly as always.

I think your vet gave you the right answer. Watch and wait. But if it happens again, even once, I'd take him in. A quick urine test - you can collect it yourself, if you're fast - is worth it for the peace of mind. Also remember that animals are stoics and don't show pain willingly so their behaviour is not always a good indication of what's up.

The only way to know what is going on is by a urine test and I wouldn't be waiting to get one done.

Well, as the vet pointed out, it could simply have been one of those strange one-time things. I thought I'd get a second opinion anyway, so I called a different vet and was told more or less the same thing: take him in if it happens again.

Of course I've been watching him like a hawk, but everything seems completely normal, and there hasn't been any more blood.

Blood is not always apparent in urine. If you saw some, it means there was quite a bit...usually it's there in such small quantities it isn't visible. If we see any, we always take in a urine sample. Usually there's an underlying infection. And the faster you catch it, the easier it is to treat.

Update, for those of you who care: urine test results will be in tomorrow, but in the meantime the vet says everything seems fine and might well have just been irritation. Also, receptionist should NOT have said to wait. Have a feeling heads may roll....

Thanks. No word yet, but it's still early.

Hope this teaches that receptionist a lesson too.

The test results are delayed, presumably because it's the weekend. Should find out tomorrow. Meanwhile, the dog seems completely fine.
