Unhappy Poop eating Shihtzu

I have a 8 month old shihtzu that likes to eat his poop--I have tried giving him medicine to stop stool eating but that does not work. The dog food he is on is Science Diet. Any suggestions???

I would try a better food..Mine used to do this also. I just made sure I picked up her poop right away. So no more poop snacks.

This is a commong thing with dogs. Especially in the winter when they are "crunchy" many seem to prefer it as a crunchy treat.. Personally I would change foods.. I would go to a good store, and read all the ingredient lists, get one that has no grain, and good meats. Like Orijen, or Evo.. or something similar. Science Diet is not on the list of foods that I would buy..The solution is to supervise your dog, and pick up any of these snacks before the dog has a chance to eat them. That is what I do. When you feed a high quality food, on a schedual you'll know when to expect the poop. You can then walk your dog, or at least go out with it, and a baggie and pick it up right away, there are other benifits to making sure there is no poop lying around.

Hope this helps! I have a shih tzu/lhasa apso cross, they sure are wonderful dogs.. Good luck!

Welcome to the Poop-eaters Club! We are a small bunch but growing in numbers

Buster is a winter-time snacker....doesn't touch it in the summer but the frozen poopsicles are his favorite. I do feed him Orijen and Wellness and that hasn't made a difference. The only thing that helps is keeping the pooper-scooper handy and following your pup around.

Hopefully he will outgrow it!

What's his name...and got pictures????
