I have a 3 1/2 month old female maltipoo and she weights just under 3 lbs. She is up to date with her shots, very healthy. My boyfriend and I were taking the puppy for a walk. The outside temp was 13 C degree, the ground was wet due to rain. Her lower body (paws, legs, chest, stomach, chin) was wet.
My questions is, can the pup be cold? She was shaking and whining and wasnt interested in playing or chasing leaves (which she loves) in a new park. Please help for my boyfriend thinks I'm babying the pup and that the pup does not get cold under these condition. |

She may have been scared because it was a new place to her.. I have a yorkie and she gets cold when she is damp.. It was 18 degrees a few weeks ago and when she got damp she was freezing cold. Being tht small she shouldnt go outside with out a sweater if it is 15 degrees and under.

can my puppy
Of course she can feel the cold, a sweater would be a good idea. Tell your boyfriend to go outside with a short-sleeved t-shirt, get wet by rolling in damp leaves and ask him if he's chilled.

At this age and that weight in rainy Vancouver she will need a sweater or better yet a rainproof puppy jacket. You can find a good selection of them at the pet supply stores such as Tisol etc

We live in a pretty warm climate and are now in spring season. Our pup is short haired and playing beautifully at the soccer park while waiting for my son to finish training late afternoon. The grass was not damp, but as soon as the sun started going down, she started to whimper and would not walk, just sat at my feet and looked up at me. As soon as i put her in my jacket she was fine, but i felt small shivers. So yeah they are very susceptible to the chill in the air. My previous dog was a husky so the colder it was the happier he was, so ive never used jackets or covers. I got her a jacket the very next day.

Don't forget to tell him to go in bare feet too! Puppy's pads on their feet are very tender, just like human's. It takes many months for the calluses to build up.

Thank you everyone, I showed my BF all the replies and I think he is convinced but wont admit it that I was right about cooton being cold. He wants a professional to tell him, so I will ask the vet too. If anyone who is a vet please have say. Thank-you

I just have one thing to add. A wet or damp jacket is worse than no jacket at all. Never leave a dog in one that is not 100% dry. I know, it seems obvious but I've seen this done over and over again at the shelter where I volunteer. It's a good idea to have 2. One drying and one to wear.

A 3 lb pup with the thin haircoat a maltipoo has is cold at 13 C even when dry. Since you reported she was WET---That is the equivalent of the BF rolling in snow naked and then crawling around in it and being expected to enjoy himself for a few hrs. Hmmm

My two large breed dogs wear waterproof coats in the rain and we live in Vancouver also. I truly believe they are much happier for it and more comfortable. I know when my hair gets wet if I just sit around with a cold wet head I feel uncomfortable and chilled until I get it dry. The jackets will help keep your pup from getting chilled right through and are a great idea. Oh and one of my dogs is an Akita X who loves the cold, but I don't believe being soaked through to the skin counts.
