Is my cat at risk?

This may be paranoid of me, but I was at a friends the other day to meet her new persian kitten. She had just gotten him. I was holding him and snuggeling him a little. He is so cute.
She just called me, she is so upset to find out from her vet that the kitten tested positive for leukemia.
My question is, could i have possibly transfer this tom my cats? I am mostly concerned with my 5 month old.
I hope this isn't a silly question, but I really am worried.
Thank you.

Breathe easy, there is no risk to your cats. None. Very sad for your friend though.

Thank you so much.
My friends heart is broken. She is taking him for a second opinion. He seems pretty sick to me. He is 4 month old and looks like a 5 week old kitten. Poor little guy.
I hope the breeder makes it right for her. She paid 1000. for him.
I love my shelter kitties.

Here is some good info about feline leukemia. I wouldn't worry too much about your kitty getting it. The virus does not survive long outside the body of the cat. Normal infection is from direct contact with body fluids.

Does your friend know if she got the kitty already infected with FelV or came into contact afterwards?

I think he had to have been infected already. She's only had him for 6 days.
So sad.

OMG, well, needless to say that this breeder should not be breeding, nothing better than a kittenmill.

I would highly recommend that your friend stay away from this breeder and try to get her money back . If she is still interested in a Persian or Himalayan, perhaps she can contact a rescue. There are always cats in need of a loving home and she won't be paying 1000 dollars for a cat.

I just talked to her. The breeder offered to give her another kitten. I think she should stay away, how can the others not be infected, really? The breeder says she has no idea how the kittie got it. Everything was fine when he left her. I say bullcrap. He had to have gotten there. I tried to talk her into a rescure before she bought him, but she is so into looks. Shame. I think all my babies are just as gorgeous.

You are right about the other kitties having it. It is spread through cat to cat contact, saliva, blood, and perhaps urine and feces. It is not like it can be transferred on the bottom of shoes.

Maybe she can join this forum and see what wonderful pets rescues make.
