bloated dog
My dad has an 11 year old JacK Russel Terrior. Two weeks ago the dog started losing weight, now the dog has a hugely bloated stomach, has very bad breath, eyes are cloady and has very small, very dark mushy stool. He took him to the Vet in town and the Vet wanted to operate, said it was the only way to tell what was wrong with the dog. Is this normal to operate so quickly without any tests being done? Is this the only option? The next nearest Veterinarian is a 4 hour drive away, please help???

Ernestine, sorry - no idea what could be the cause of your dog's distress.
But there are always questions you can ask any vet:
Good luck! (A former Saskatchewanian myself...) |

Bloated dog
Sorry, no real choice but to consider surgery ( if it already hasn't been done) otherwise your dog could die in fairly quick time. Your Veterinarian should at least have run some xrays, blood work before the time so that he knows what he is dealing with. Your dog should be kept on iv fluids during and after the op, and you should know if with all of these procedures to help ensure safety, there is no guarentee of recovery.

Bloat
Hi,
Is bloat an inherited problem? I would also like to know if there are degrees of bloat? Our vet took X-rays and told us our dog wasn't bloated enough to need surgery. Yet, she keeps throwing up. She is doing her business outside, so she is getting some food in her. Could her getting sick be caused by something else? It isn't constant, but happens enough where I am still concerned. Thank you, Gayle |
