Hummingbird nests

Has anyone ever tried hanging a cage or net ball filled with natural cotton next to their hummingbird feeders? Its supposed to give them material for their nests, and give you othe opportunity to see where they are taking it to, so you might see a nest. I bought one, and so far the hummers are ignoring it, so I'm starting to wonder if it really works, or is just a gimmick.
