Are you my mother?
The first duckling to hatch in my incubator was lonely all by itself in the brooder so I brought it upstairs and it started following me around. Then thought Dru might be a better choice. He was curious but wouldn't let it get close enough to cuddle up with him
"Hey, there's a duck in the house!" "Are you my mother?" "It's following me! What do I do?"

...and this is how I know when my dogs are doing their goose control work that they won't do them any harm
But, it's a good thing this little duckling now has brothers and sisters. If I let the ducklings get too imprinted on the dogs it could be a problem...for my friend who wants to use them for herding demos. Her hubby does a demo with sheep and then she does one with ducks, having one of her dogs herd the ducks through an obstacle course. If the ducks are too attached to the dogs, rather than moving away from them they might be more inclined to follow. I don't know that she has time to teach her stockdogs how to run an agility course so the ducklings will follow

Lovely series of photo's , Gail. The other side of the coin is that two of my shelties had a scrap this morning just over some bird feathers one of them found. I don't think they'd be as kind to your duckling as Dru is.
Pity your friend can't teach her dogs that way, it'd look hilarious. LOL. |

A border collie's worst nightmare, I think.
Gail, do you work the ducklings at all to get them used to it, or wait until they're full-grown and feathered? |

I don't really begin working them that young but my dogs and my poultry all grow up together. Every pup I adopt starts going out to the coop doing chores with me from a young age and all the chicks/ducklings/poults are introduced to dogs from the beginning. That way the dogs learn how to behave and the poultry don't get panicked if they're worked. Here are some older pictures

Okay, that makes sense, socializing them together so they're calm and comfortable around each other.
I can see it's not the first time a duckling or two has snuck into the house! |

Quote:
The ducks in the tub were the first ones I bought so I'd have something to use for herding practice with my dogs since I don't have my own sheep. One of those 6 died when it was bigger (don't know why) and another got taken by a coon but the other 4 are some of the 8 adult ducks I keep and get all these eggs I'm incubating from. I also kept 4 of last years babies to replace the 2 lost ones and increase the "flock" a bit. My adults are probably the most well traveled non-migratory ducks around. Last year they went to herding demos in Waterloo, Wellend, Roseneath, Bobcaygeon and I can't remember where else. In a few weeks they'll be somewhere in Quebec doing a demo. It's not just ducks that I sometimes have in my house, all my chicks and turkeys have to start out in the house too when they're tiny and need a heat lamp. My coop has no electricity so I have a brooder area set up in the basement that I start them in for a few weeks and then move them out.

Dru looks like hes saying " See, I'm being good, Mom". How patient he is, its amazing. Mine would never be that good.

Dru was the only one inside at the time and he's gentle. I wouldn't have put the duckling down on the floor if I had all the dogs in. Most of mine would be good one on one, or even a couple at a time but it would too much commotion for the duckling with all dogs in at one time. And there are one or two that might be a bit too rough with a duckling this tiny. I could see Flurry getting a bit snappy or squashing it with one of his huge feet. Thunder would probably want to adopt it as his own though. Every time there's a new puppy in the house Thunder becomes "uncle Thunder" and likes to cuddle with them and protect them from the other dogs.

Aww, almost nothing cuter than a tiny duckling. Unless it's a tiny puppy, tiny kitten, tiny chippie, tiny .......... you get my drift.
