Dog has strange voice loss. Can't whine, but can bark just fine
I have a 2 year old hound mix (beagle, dachsund, something?).
Anyway, he howls when he's lonely and also when he's excited. He also barks a lot at passing dogs, etc. Over the past 2-3 weeks, he has progressively lost his ability to whine/howl. When he tries to whine or whimper (he does this a lot usually when we return home), he sounds very hoarse. And its a lot quieter than usual. The weird thing is, his bark is exactly the same. He still growls and barks exactly the same as before. When he plays with my other dog, he makes the exact same noises. Its only the whining thats the problem. This is actually a nice change, but Im worried about why its happening. I think it may be because he whines all day when we're at work and is losing that portion of his voice. We just started giving him the whole house and he sees a lot more dogs out the windows now. But it hasn't gotten better so I dont know what to do |

Please take him to the vet for a checkup. When a bark or whine changes in any way it is a great cause for concern.

I agree with 14+, geoffh4. A vet visit is in order.
