Antibiotic Not Working
My 12.5 y/o rottie Xena has had a nasal and eye discharge for 1 month. She lost her vision at the beginning of this illness. The vet had her on augmentin and then cipro. A culture revealed a positive stap infection that should have responded to them. Xena is frail and would not survive any invasive tests/surgery. The vet said fungal infection or tumor. Either one is bad. My husband are waiting to hear from a specialist to see if there are any other things we could do. Xena eats ( but not as much as before), drinks alot of water, does her business( defecating is hard because her back legs are weak, and sleeps most of the day. Sometimes all she does is pant or make a rumbling sound as she breathes. Does anyone have any experiences like this recently? There was an older thread, too many years old, and I want some new responses. Thank You

Linens
I was not aware of that. I wash out her bowls after she eats and drinks. Now I will wash her linen daily. Than you

Were there other antibiotics the culture responded to? Has your vet discussed trying a different one?
Sometimes infections can become resistant to antibiotics and the effectiveness of the ones used most often can be reduced.

Xena
The antibiotics she was on should have knocked it out:Augmentin and cipro . Vet suggested a specialist and more tests but Xena is 12.6 and frail. We do not think she would survive what they want to do to her nasal area. So we opted out of that. We will do what we can to keep her comfortable but will not let her suffer.
If it is a fungus would it be contagious to my other rott and my golden? They do not interact since Xena became ill, I wash her food and water bowls daily. |

Xena
The vet said it was a very inaggressive infection in most dogs but was an opportunistic one. Since there is also something else very wrong, that is how Xena got the infection. He said not to worry about the dogs and if they start sneezing, we have options to treat it with for them.
My husband and I have opted out for further invasive testing for my sweet girl. She is not healthy enough for them. So we watch her and when we see it is time, we will help her pass over the Bridge. Thank you all |
