Starting a dog park
Hi: Sorry, never posted before and new to this so please bear with me. I am a life-long dog owner and my nine-year-old female King Shepherd is my best friend. I have made many great friends as we've walked the streets of Trenton ward, Quinte West Ontario.
When an idea came up for a non-profit volunteer driven dog park in the city I agreed to help make this dream become a reality. Has anyone any ideas about how best to achieve this goal? We must raise about $17,000 for a fence enclosed, two-acre site. The land will be provided by the city but they won't provide any financial help. We're tossing around the idea of a dog walk, dog picnic, etc. Thanks for any ideas you can forward. Jack |

That is wonderful Jack, I hope you are successful!
Get on boad with pet shops (that don't sell pets) ask them to sponsor Also approach some of the larger chain stores like Canadian Tire and Home Depot. Put an ad in the local community paper asking for donations and assistance. Contact fencing companies see if any of them would be interested. By the way, is the land going to be close to a Humane Society/spca/city pound? If not advocate for it to be, that way part of it can be used for the dogs in shelter, volunteers can take the dogs to a fenced off area in the same area as non stray/adoptables and I think you would have a wonderful set up there! Go for it!!

Luba: Thanks for the kind words and support. Unfortunately Quinte West does not have a humane society and the animal control is located in the country some distance from the proposed dog park.
The proposed site itself is a 40 acre forest with trails, and is popular with dog owners. The fenced site will be located about 20 yards from the parking lot. The property is level which will make it easy for seniors no longer able to run their dogs in the park to use this facility. The city is willing to donate benches. Jack |

Jack, here is a link to our leash-free park, in Kitchener-Waterloo area. I was on the committee that started this, however, I was mostly behind the scenes. Lots of great links here, as well as a page that gives ideas about opening a park.

Goldenmom: Thanks for the great information. The links are fantastic and I've printed off a few to take to our next meeting, one week from tonight. Initial response from the people I've talked to is good, and several have offered to dig into their own pocket – even non-dog owners – to contribute. The committee is feeling pretty confident thanks to great support from people like you.
