question about diarrhea

Hi,

first I will give a little background info. For the last year my dog has smelled BAD. To the point that no one wanted to pet her. I gave her baths, took her to the vet nothing helped. I specifically asked the vet last spring if it could be her anal glands...she said nope they are fine. Well I had had enough of the smell and brought her to a new vet...whom I love. She immediately checked her anal glands and Lo and behold they were FULL. It took her 2 shots to express them...and man did it stink. Anyway that was Tuesday, sonce then she has had watery poop..so diarrhea. I am not sure if this is normal. I have been giving her rice in hopes of hardening her poops and lots of water to keep her hydrated. She is acting completely normal..well except for a little silly with the excitment of peoplel cuddling her again

So is it normal for a dog to have diarrhea after thier anal glands are expressed? Is there anything else I should be doing to help harden her poops? I have called the vet and am waiting for a call back.

Thanks in advance

What food are you feeding? I'm just curious and I hope at least one of the vets brought it up while you were trying to figure out what the smell was... Also, if it's a natural food (i.e. not made by IAMS, Purina, Science Diet (hill's) or med-ical, etc) then you can try reducing the feeding amount for a couple of days by 1/8 of a cup (if it's a medium-big doggy, for a smaller one reduce even less). Or I'd give 1/2 the normal portion for one day and see if it clears up. If not, back to the vet.

Did the doggy have anything else done at the vet? It could be that she got very upset by it and isn't digesting because of her emotions...

She is on the same food that she has been on since she was a puppy...Purina. It is the ONLY thing she will eat...we have tried it all.

It was definelty her anal glands that were causing the smell as she smells fine now that they have been emptied. Nothin else was done at the vets as that was the first thing she suspected it being.

She is a big dog...78lbs.

Tried everything meaning all the commercial foods? Or did you try foods like Merrick, Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, etc? I'm just curious. A lot of people don't know what different kinds of amazing foods are really out there.
