Over the past couple months I have noticed that my dog is consuming an excessive amount of water. He still eating and has great energy. Are there any illnesses associated with excessive water consumption?

yes. Diabetes and Thyroid problems.

I suggest a vet visit asap as both these can be fatal if left untreated

Yeah I would see the vet for a general check up take a stool sample it will save the trip back and I am sure they will ask for one. It could be nothing but as raingirl suggested diabetes or thyroid could be a possibility. When was his last check up? If it was around a year ago he is due anyway so if you are a little early no big deal at least you will have peace of mind if nothing is wrong.

Too much water consumption flags an endocrine problem like mentioned above...all take a specific test, none can be lumped into one, however...a complete blood panel/profile can give a hint in what direction to go. A blood glucose is included in the profile.. to check for elevated sugar levels. A T-4 will test the thyroid. Another one is the ACTH stimulation to test for Cushings Syndrome. Your vet will be able to explain in detail.

Good luck and keep us posted please!
