Post FOUND: Blind American Eskimo Dog Near AB Hwy

Male, all white with some black around the eyes, 20 - 30 lbs, blind in both eyes (no pupil or iris left, pure milky blue in colour), 10 - 13 yrs old. Sweet, intelligent fellow, very quiet. Obviously well taken care of as he's clean and smells like doggy shampoo.

A dog like this truly deserves his home and family back. If this is your dog or if you've seen ads looking for this dog please post here. I'll be checking for replies often as I'd prefer to only disclose my personal contact info to select individuals.

Thank you.

I hate to sound suspicious, but due to this pup's blindness and where he was found, I am afraid he has been dumped. I have an American Eskimo so noted this post - I am in Toronto though. I expect you have checked to see if this Eskie is microchipped. I know that there are a lot of Eskies in Alberta - and in Western Canada in General. It might not hurt to see if there is an Eskie Rescue or a Heart Bandits in the area - for some reason I think not. And it might be worth putting a notice on the Eskie specific board - www.eskie.net. There are many Eskie owners who lurk on that board rather than signing on - you can see all posts without signing on - and well, frankly, that is what I do. You might well find a lurker who lives in Alberta who might be able to give you some guidance. Hope you find the owner and it turns out that they are scared and looking for their dog. But I just can't see a blind Eskie on the highway - unless there was a car accident. Eskies can go blind -particularly if they have blue eyes - a no-no when it comes to Eskies.

I know - about him being dumped, that is. At leas that was my suspicion. But a twelve-year-old dog? Blind? Well-groomed and well-fed? My biggest fear is some sick individual stole him and dumped him somewhere, someone who wasn't the owner. I posted under the slim chance someone would be looking for their beloved old pooch.

He could have been dumped, but don't jump to conclusions. I would contact your local spca and fill out a found report with them. Someone may have called the shelter looking for him.

A dog running on a highway, happens here quite alot. Even though this dog is blind, doesn't mean that he is completely quite. Something could have spooked him and he just ended up on the highway.

I hope his owner is found - and soon - and that he/she is looking for him. Eskies do not do well in shelters.

I know a lady who had a blind dog. The grand daughters left the gate open when they were over at the house and the blind dog went out the gate and got lost. My friend put up flyers and looked for days, poor pup was found later had been hit by a car. So please don't assume the dog was dumped. Someone might of just left the door open and he wandered and then didn't know which way to turn to find home...bless his little heart.

Kestrel thank u so much for rescuing this dog. Can u imagine how scare it was and is? I hope the owner is found soon.

I was thinking - I don't know where you are in Alberta, but if the owners had their dog's eyes checked by their regular vet - or an eye specialist, it might not be that hard to find the vet in question. Toronto is a very big city, yet when one of our cats came down with Primary Glaucoma our vet in Toronto sent us to the clinic where most of the Toronto specialists operate from - and they in turn sent us to an eye specialist who works out of a "regular" Toronto vet - and as it turns out the same vet who sold our vets of 30 years their practice - and is the go-to guy. They "specialist" clinic did not have an eye specialist at the time. I think that in Alberta the vet teaching hospital is near Edmonton? That might be a place to start too. Also, one day while at my vet's/groomer's - they share the front and back of a building, a client came in with a dog they had found running loose in the ravine without ID. Our vet was not the closest to the ravine, but within reasonable distance - so she came to her own vet for help. Our vet's office manager called the other vets in the area and the groomer looked at the dog and could tell that he had been professionally groomed (fortunately not a short-haired dog) and she placed a couple of calls as well to other groomers. This is how they found the dog's owners - by word of mouth. Unfortunately the dog had not been chipped - he is now - a beautiful dog that the woman who found him took home - and was quite taken with. So you never know. If you can tell if this Eskie has been professionally groomed that might help you as well. Our guy does not blow his coat as per the norm - except for the white hair all over me and the air in question, so he does get groomed. You can tell - there are 2 other Eskies in our neighbourhood and while the owners do attempt to groom them their ability with the scissiors is about the same as mine - nil. If you put all 3 dogs together you would have no problem figuring out which one is mine - but if I just put up a notice with a general picture, people would not be able to tell the difference. Many people though just trim the hair about the feet and the pants, but our guy would like like a huge puff ball of matted hair if not groomed - he is more of a bear type Eskie than a fox type. Just a thought. We had a Dachshund go blind at age 11 and it was hard but our touch made all the difference to him - and he was absolutely never off leash - especially when he could see. Then there are the people I know who lived on a dark street, without sidewalks, with a black, blind,14 year old small dog who would let him out every night on his own to do his business - well, you can no doubt guess what happened. And to listen to their "grief" - well, what did they expect. I guess I am focused on where the dog was found - at least I am assuming from your post, not in a residential neighbourhood. Most people with Eskies do not let them off-leash unless in a fenced off area - and a very high one at that - so I hate to be skeptical - and am hoping for the best. I would be having an absolute fit. A dog went missing in our neighbourhood on May 3. The people put up a sign with a picture that could fit a dozen dogs - just stating that dog had gone missing that day - No Name, No Address, last seen - zip. I had my pen with me and was on a roll that day so wrote the ?s right on the form - well they replaced it with the generic one. Obviously not that concerned. Guess they have never rescued the wrong pet from the street (obviously I have).
