Low phosphorus vitamin chews?
Does anyone know of a high quality, low phosphorus vitamin supplement safe for older kitties with compromised kidneys? I was using Soft Vitachews (from PetMeds) but looked today and found that they are pretty high in phosphorus.

I like Nu-Cat Senior vitamins by Vetri-science (the tablets, not the chewables). They also contain phosphorus (25mg per 4 tablets) but it's not an excessive amount. I usually just give my guy 2 tabs a day instead of 4.

Thanks, SugarcatMom -- do you just grind it into the wet food?

I'm using the regular NuCat for my senior CRF kitty 2 tablet/day as directed by my vet. The tablet bottle does say chewable so you could try giving it as a treat see if your cat will eat it that way. I just pill mine (she won't eat treats like that plus she has other supplements pilled at the same time) , but you can crush it into the canned food, to ensure they get full value of vitamins make sure the cat is either eating the entire portion of food or crush it into a small portion of food feed that first then give the rest of the meal.

You're right, I meant I didn't like the "soft chews". Some cats do like them as treats but they have a strong vitamin B smell, which other cats (like mine) find offensive. What I do is cut the tablets into quarters with a pill splitter (they're pretty large) and put them inside a treat (lamb Halo Liv-a-Littles work well for this). I don't see why you couldn't also pulverize them and put them in wet food, as long as it doesn't put your kitty off of their food.

Might be a dumb question, but this thread brought it to my mind - under what circumstances should someone consider giving their kitty vitamin supplements?
My three Himalayans are on quality canned foods such as Wellness grain-free, Evo, Natural Balance, and similar. Should I consider giving them vitamin supplements? I was under the impression that their current regime contained all the vitamins they need. |

Older cats or cats with health conditions usually benefit from some additional supplementation.
