Unhappy Shedding cat

My cat's fur is "matted." He is old and has had this problem before from not grooming. I assumed it was because he was getting old and it was difficult for him to groom as often. The problem went away. Now the "mats" are back and very bad. They are falling out and I find huge clumps of fur everywhere, worse than his normal shedding. He has bald spots where the large clumps are falling out. He seems to be in some discomfort when I brush or pet the areas. Why are the mats falling out? Why doesnt his self grooming or my brushing seem to help? What can I do?

If he has mats, try to cut them off so they're not pulling on the skin. I shave my cat because of her mats. Try and see a groomer. He needs to be brushed by you. He is probably sore with those mats .

These mats are extremely uncomfortable for your cat, and probably even painful.

He is either pulling them out himself, or they are so tight they are pulling out on their own. If they are very close to the skin, you shouldn't try cutting them yourself as you may very well cut the cat's skin.

Agree he should go to a groomer and then you can start brushing him every day to make sure this doesn't happen again.

And I suggest you groom him very carefully, trying not to touch his skin. Since he is old, his skin may be sensitive. Can I also suggest a oily supplement? Great for skin and coat. Even a vitamin E capsule broken over his food will help.
