Help, sweet dog is chewing foot off

My boyfriend’s sweet mixed breed, Buster, now a little over a year old had an unfortunate accident several months ago. At about 9 months, he broke his left hind leg. He went into surgery where the vet found nerve damage. After having a the leg and nerve damage repaired, he was showing signs of improvement – walking on the leg, putting his foot down and regaining feeling in the lower part of his foot. Unfortunately, we have encountered a problem that might put a stop to his recovery. The vet said that his foot will start to “tingle” as he regains use of it. Lately because of the “tingle” he has started to bite at his foot. At first, it was just a few scratches but it has gotten a lot worse. We were using the Elizabethan collar to keep him from reaching his foot but today he has licked and chewed it so much that he has removed hair and several layers of skin, exposing the meaty tissue of most of the lower half of his foot (which is now an open wound). My boyfriend is taking him to the vet tomorrow to clean and bandage the wound. Has anyone had a similar experience? We were so close to getting him well and his self-mutilation has been very frustrating. We both love Buster and hate to think amputation would occur after so many months of progress after his surgery. Any ideas/suggestions would help greatly! Thank you.

Our dog was hit by a ski-doo (snowmobile) and her front leg was broke in 2 places, she has pins put in as well as a cast put on.
She had the cast chewed off in the car on the way home form the vet!!
(she was also licking and chewing the wound)
Mom had to turn around and bring her right back.
After coming home with a new cast, she had to keep (we used a bucket with the bottom cut out, and attached it to her collar, they did not have those collars back then) the bucket on till she was completely healed, I know it sound mean, but It's for the best, keep that elizabethan collar on until it's completely healed, there is also a a cream we used that was a disinfectant, with a very bitter taste, so she would now lick or chew.

I'm so sorry this, it must be so frustrating for you. HappyCats's idea about the disinfectant sounds like a good one. I'm sure your vet will have some sort of solution tomorrow & maybe the vets office carries the product HappyCats is refering to.

Please keep us posted & welcome to the board.

Your dog could be licking due to pain, is the dog on any type of pain killer? If not maybe ask your vet for something.
