Scrotal hematoma after neuter?

My doberman went to be sterilised last wednesday and came back with a scrotal hematoma (I was told this is also called Blue Bag?). I was given NovoLexin for him for 7 days, told to keep him really really quiet and to just make sure that I didnt see anything getting worse.

Well all the horrible bruising has since went away, and I have noticed a significant reduction in the swelling. My husband (God knows why he decided this all on his own) decided that the dog really wanted to go for a few minutes of playtime and let him out loose for a fewminutes.

Well, that is all it took and now his 'sack' is really swollen again (not bruised though). I spoke to the vet and he can see him monday morning.

Anybody have any experience with this?

A few of my fosters got the same ... it went away without antibiotics , but they needed to stay calm ... no running , jumping etc ...

cold compress can also help.

Frenchy - i really do have to post pics...neither of my boys are photogentic at all though. I will try to post some this weekend.

and this morning I was trying to get a somewhat better look at the swelling, and he was uncomfortable enough to snap at me, poor guy. but I will see if he will tolerate a compress. thanks!

oh well if he doesn't like it , no biggie , I tried with a few dogs and only one let me. The others didn't like it and I didn't force it on them , still , the swelling and blue color went away. Most important is to keep them from running and jumping , which is hard enough

Cole had a similar problem. We used compresses, too, and he seemed to think they felt good cuz he let me apply them. Eventually, though, the vet had to extract some of the liquid by needle aspiration before the bleeders dried up and everything finally healed.

This can happen occasionally but since your dog is a doberman, I'd talk to your vet about running a clotting profile. I believe doberman's are prone to clotting problems.
