How bad is the gingivitis? Can you hold off for a bit? When I had dental work done on Sweet Pea, she was in so much pain (two broken teeth )she stopped eating so dental could not wait.

Normally a vet will do blood work before doing a dental, I would be surprised if that was not already included in your quote.

February is Pet Dental Month and the vets give a discount so wait until then to get a price quote.

a cleaning and 1 extraction cost us $800,including blood-work+my vet removed a growth on Vinnies belly while he was under.
Dental-Work is expensive for sure, but it is something very crucial for a kitties health.
Infected teeth can cause all kinds of healthproblems.

Golly, I think our dollars are about even and I recently had Gemma speyed, a vaginal swab done first to make sure she wasn't in season(the boys thought she was but they were wrong), blood work done, the spey and her teeth cleaned, with some loose incisors removed ..... not much over $500. I am horrified when I read some of the prices you folk get charged. I might get a quote on dental work for cats, maybe it's more complex or expensive?

There can be a pretty wide range of prices for dentals, but you have to find out what's included. Cheaper isn't always better. Pre-op blood work is essential, but there are other considerations that add to the cost, like the type of anesthetic used (isoflurane or sevoflurane), pre and maybe post op IV fluids, blood pressure monitoring, x-rays, pain medication, antibiotics, etc.

I paid just over $800 a few years ago for my senior kitty to have a dental and 3 teeth removed (one being a rather complicated canine extraction). It was worth every penny. He just had a cleaning about 10 months ago that cost a little less than $500.

I recently had my 2 cats' dental cleaning done last month (Dec./10). The pre-op bloodwork was done a few days before the dental cleaning. They had not had their teeth cleaned since I had them as kittens, and felt they were overdue as there was quite a bit of tartar on their molars.

Pre-op bloodwork for my 6 y.o.neuter.
Examination $55.
Blood Collection $25
Geriatric profile $110.
Clindamycin $19.60 .... Total $209.60

Pre-op bloodwork for my 6 y.o. spay (gr.2 heart murmur):
Examination $55
Blood Collection $25
Geriatric profile $110
Electrocardiogram $90 (results sent to a specialist in NY)
Clindamycin $19.60 .... Total $299.60
Plus HST $66.20

Dental Cleaning charges for neuter:
Dental cleaning/polish $150
Anesthesia $85
Hospitalization 1/2 day $25
Anesthesia Monitoring $45
Fluids, perioperative $40
Injections, Analgesia & Antibiotic $30
Blood Glucose/Test $25 ....Total $400

Dental Cleaning charges for spay (same as neuter, except no Glucose Test)
Total $375

Total dental cleaning for 2 cats: $875.75

Pre-op bloodwork & dental cleaning for the neuter.....total was $609.60
Pre-op bloodwork & dental cleaning for the spay........total was $674.60.
Plus HST $100.75 (on the dental cleaning)

I was not charged for "Nail Trim" as I did it myself before their cleaning.

The vet described amount of tartar on teeth as moderate, and there was no gingivitis or periodontal disease. They are both fed same food----no-grain canned (Wellness) and kibble (Evo or Nature's Variety) in proportion of 3/4 canned to 1/4 kibble.

I have used the last 3 yrs. a supplement called "Nature's Dentist" that's sprinkled on their food, and I think it's helped---no bad breath. It sure was a whack of $$$ tho to have to spend! It'll probably be another 5 yrs. before I have it done again.

wow...what a great forum! lots of helpful responses!!

its not too bad...yet. i took a look inside his mouth with the vet and there is a little redness on the gums surrounding his back teeth and he is not in any pain...
basically it was broken down for me like this:
"scaling and polishing, with IV fluids and approximately one hour of anesthetic is around $800" .... " If the gingivitis is advanced, we would have to extract teeth, that will up the cost. Further to that, blood work needs to be done prior so we know what type of anesthetic to give him, given his age, we highly recommend that this is done. Blood work can’t be done the same day, we would have to bring him in prior, i.e. on a Saturday and then dental on the Monday. It’s a day surgery, so he would come home that night, possibly with antibiotics if we are concerned about infection.

The two bumps could be extracted at the same time, cost anywhere from $200-$400 depending on how long he is under anesthetic. If we want it to go the lab for pathology, that’s $150."

sorry for the long post....he is a member of our family and we will definately do what it takes to keep him healthy...we just dont want to be taken advantage of...
thanks everyone!

I know my mom paid over $600 for dental work on her dog about 2 years ago then additional blood work cost more, I have been lucky and never had to have dental work on any of my pets.

I was going to suggest asking about February being dental month as well. That is usually a 20% discount.
The last dental work I had done for one of my guys was in February 2007 and it was $510.11. That included pre-op blood work, scaling, and 6 extractions plus pre anesthetic med and the anesthetic and 1/2 day hospital stay.
That price included the 20% dental discount and my usual 20% multipet discount from the vet.
I'm thinking now that was pretty reasonable.
