my cat is attacking his tail
A few weeks ago I noticed that my cat has been attacking his tail. He has been biting it to the point where most of the fur is gone from the tip and it was bleeding....but that didn't stop him. He kept at it and was crying as he was doing it. I took him to the vet where they took X-rays of his tail. The X-rays came back fine and the vet cannot figure out what the heck is going on. We have bandaged up his tail and he has left it alone with the bandage on but once I take it off, he's right after his tail again, and he's really hurting himself. I don't know what to do. He can't go on for the rest of his life with a bandage on the end of his tail but that's the only way he leaves it alone. This is so strange and I don't know what to do......Can anyone help???

Welcome to the board
First we need pics of kitty Second, I am not much help medically, but maybe dipping his tail in something sour? ...or distracting him with something fun every time you see him doing it?

It's possible you may have to try anti-anxiety meds for a little while to break the compulsion. Is there a feline only vet in your area? They would possibly be more up-to-date on this condition than a general vet.

Responses to my cat won't stop biting his tail....THANK YOU!!!
Wow...wasn't expecting such a quick response but thank you both so much. Well I have tried to distract him while he's doing it but it doesn't seem to work. And I won't be able to distract him all the time. To Sugarcatmom, your link was extremely helpful!! Hyperesthesia sounds a lot like what my poor baby might have!! The symptoms sound quite similar so I will be printing that off and taking it to my vet. Man these animals are costing me a fortune. I had a black lab that had a SEVER case of separation anxiety and, well, to make a long story short, he went through a window and cut himself up very badly and we had to put him down. We went through a lot of money though before we actually had to do that, but these animals are our babies and I would do whatever it takes to help them when they're sick!!! I believe these animals were sent to me for a reason cuz someone knew that I would really take care of them......ANYWAYS....thank you guys so much for the advise....it's very helpful...Oh and how do I upload pics of my babies???
