Forget the dog days of Summer
Here is the horse days of spring
Viggo to Calvin "Buddy PLEASE dont fart" Calvin : "zzzzzzzz" (insert fart sound here) Viggo: "BUDDY, what do you think you are an Airwick?" Harliegh: "haha, this is why I stay over here and sleep standing" "That was so wrong, but I will pose anyway since I am the horse also known as FABIO" Old man Calvin still snoring away and bearing teeth Change positions, nose to the ground it is Well, break time is over, back to mowing and fertilizing the lawn for you Where to start? (Pay no mind to his ribbyness, he's old and a hard keeper) Marv on his guardian watch while I mow the lawn... erm, they help me mow the lawn... errrm, shh dont tell my man this is how I mow the lawn My stylin lawmowers Miss Fe will not be in any pictures for a couple months, she left for reform school on monday... I sent her back to the trainers and I will be riding out there with the trainers super great girlfriend and he is going to be giving her a little refresher on ground manners and hopefully work on some of her headstrong ness.... Miss Fe has taken to kicking out at people over the past few weeks which is NOT acceptable so, boot camp/reform school it is

Interesting tidbit then, a horse will lay down flat out like that for their REM sleep and they will only do it for a short period of time. Horses only really sleep about 2-4 hours a day and in 15 minute incriments (give or take) be it standing or laying
If they don't feel secure or safe in their environment they will not lay like that. Its a good sign of content and happy horses. There is always one that will stay standing when they lay down, I guess they take turns being on watch for the others to get their good rest in. Even though I am aware of this, those first pics when i walked out and saw that, I for a split second thought someone had killed and lined up my horses like that. I have never seen them sleep together like that before.

Winston, I did laugh at you saying you don't get out much, someone told me the same only the other day because I said I'd never seen a certain flower in my life before.
Absolutely wonderful photo's as usual, Erykah. Do you ever give Calvin any boiled barley? That's what we use to fatten the thin ones. We just cook a cup at a time or it will go off, when it's cooked and split we feed half say in tonight's feed, half tomorrow, then cook fresh stuff. Having said that, I am well aware of how hard it is to keep oldies looking good, my 31 year old looked worse but I am pleased with my 26 year old. She just has ribs barely showing so far. Your first two photo's are hilarious. LOL. For those who would worry that they'd gone to the big grassy paddock in the sky, on the very rare, sad occassion they may have. I had to check up on some TB mares one day and had friends with me, so when all but one horse came down and I could see a chestnut lying alone, I told them to stay put and went to have a look. Sure enough, she was dead, possibly from snakebite, and such a terrible loss, she was young and by the leading TB sire of the time. That's our rotten Brown snakes for you though, they kill a lot of livestock. I hope Miss Fe gets sorted for you, Erykah, she'd really pack a punch if she managed to connect. |

I havent given boiled barley, I am kind of freaked out by it to be honest so we feed him beet pulp and high fat and fiber. I had him on a spectacular senior feed but he was so HOT after a few weeks on that you couldn't get near him.
He is due to have his teeth floated in the coming weeks and once he has some good dentistry done he picks up weight really well in the summer months between perfect grinding ability and pasture. He loses it during the winter months quickly though.

You could always give him the boiled barley in the cold months. We never found it heating. My husband fed it to a hackney and, as a friend once said, all they have between their ears is a bell. LOL. And I can relate to that Senior feed. I once talked hubby into giving his hackney a special prepared mix and boy, did that set him off. Must say he stepped exceptionally well, but very hard to control.

Beautiful pics and love those captions. Smart Harliegh to keep a safe distance.
I'd love to have your lawnmowers but could they skip the fertilizer?
