feeling ill
Is this normal? I'm feeling so ill today that I can't eat anything. I'm so worried about leaving our new furbaby at home alone.
Also, the rescue really REALLY wants us to start obedience school tonight, as a new session starts tonight, but because of my new job starting in two weeks, I don't know what my schedule will be like in 2 weeks, I don't want to make that commitment yet! Next classes start in March, and by then I will have a better idea of when I have time off for training. Do you think that would be ok? I just spoke with the trainers and they anticipate all the classes will be filled within an hour. I want to take him, but what if I can't make it wednesday nights after the first two weeks?? He is already crate trained, and the fosters said he is fine 8-9 hours with no problems. He has three chew toys (two filled kongs and some rubber thing), a mat, and blanket. We put him facing the TV and have it on with CityTV playing. He slept ok last night, probably more than we did. My neck is killing me as I kept tossing and turning. He did #1 and #2 on our first walk this morning around 5:30 AM. Then home for breakfast and play time. THen we took him out again around 6:45 as Archie and him walked me to the train station. Archie said he didn't do #2 though. I thought they were supposed to go after eating?? Will he do it in his crate then?

Awww sweetie you worry too much!!(although it's normal for me!) You are lucky because the dog was previously owned, so he's already trained and knows that he'll be alone in the day. If it makes ya feel better...I've heard dogs have no concept of time so he won't know if you've been gone 5 minutes or 5 hours!
Don't worry if he didn't go #2 on his second walk. If he already went, he probably won't need to go again until you get home! His poop this morning was probably from yesterdays meal! |

You will be fine Raingirl. You have educated yourself about owning a pet, your dad has lots of dog experience and you have all of us to fall back on.
Personally, obedience classes are the best route to go when adopting a dog (it is "STRONGLY RECOMMENDED" in our adoption contracts), BUT, if it is going to cause that much stress , it is not worth it right now. That stress (getting there on time, "I really need to be somewhere else") transmits right down that leash. You can start training at home. There are books and videos, and everyone here will help you to set up your own training program. Also Blizzard was owned before, so the bigger purpose of obedience classes is to get him to obey YOU rather than learning what the commands mean. So take some nice, deep breaths, hold them for a few seconds and exhale. You will be fine. Blizzard is a very lucky dog to have you and Archie. Wish I was back in TO to hug you in person, but this will have to do instead

Awww, raingirl, you'll be fine! You just have the new mommy jitters. You'll do great, I'm sure of it! Just expect to screw up from time to time. We all do!
As for the obedience classes, call up the school and ask if you'd be able to reschedule in the event of a change in work routine. My school has multiple classes running all week, so if you can't make it one night, they're sure to have a make-up class going on later in the week or on the week-end. It's a good idea to get in there sooner rather than later, just to help develop your relationship. My neighbors didn't take their new adoptee to class, and now that he's been there a while and has gotten comfortable, he's taken to escaping from the yard and going for jaunts to the next town. |

Whoo...thanks. I was a little worried.
I noticed some browish stuff coming from his eyes this morning. He is on antibiotics for eye surgery, like drops and things, so I think it's from that, but I will be taking him to the vet this week, possibly tomorrow, to get it checked anyway.

Aww... I agree. I think it's adorable that you're worrying, but don't, everything will be fine. I'm sure a number 2 will come along . Just keep doing what you're doing . Blizzard is a very lucky boy
If you prefer to take classes later, don't stress it ... just reschedule. |

I am not sure about Blizzard's breed, but I wipe brown stuff from my Golden & mini doxie's eyes. It is "sleep" like we get in our eyes.
Since he has had surgery, it is a wise precaution to have it checked out. And for your vet to see Blizzard when he is healthy, so he will recognize when something is not quite "right" with Blizzard. (Love the name) As for Muttluks, they are the best. But you might be able to get away without any boots at all (I did not have boots for my golden in Toronto, just when we moved to the frozen East). Or go with the cheapies this year, if he loses one, so what. Invest in the good stuff next year. After all it is February, so not many more weeks of the cold stuff left. Relax, you will be a GREAT mom.

I figured it was just "sleep" but wanted to make sure. We are going to make a vet appointment for tomorrow though, because it looks like his cherry eye popped out on his right eye again. He's also scratching more, so maybe that's why.
Also, does pet insurance cover medications?

If you already have pet insurance, it may be covered--read the fine print. If you do not have any it probably won't be covered. Most insurances won't cover pre exsisiting conditions or an illness that starts during the waiting period. And some won't cover any consequentail or secondary conditions resulting from an illness.
