I'm watching it on TV right now. I'm trying to get through on the phone, but having difficulty. But I sent this e-mail--
First of all, I want to say Thank You Alex, for confronting Michael Bryant. I think the biggest problem that people have with what is going on is the lack of information, or rather, the deluge of misinformation that is going on right now. These dogs are called ticking time bombs, that they are wired to attack. That is simply not true. As anyone who has studied the history will tell you, they were bred to be human friendly. As despicable as dog fighting is, they actually have rules. When one dog breaks one of those rules, a person who was usually unknown to the dog, had to step in between them and break them up. There is no denying the strength and unwillingness to give up in these dogs. If they even were slightly aggressive towards a human, they were destroyed on the spot. These dogs have been used as therapy dogs, police dogs, guide dogs. Helen Keller had a pitbull. But instead we have mass hysteria being perpetuated by both Michael Bryant and the media. I have researched some of the attacks, and several of them that were reported to be pitbulls by the mass media, were not actually pitbulls! The other issue is the fact that statistics are being ignored. The one caller talked about his French Poodle. The American Tempermant Society has PROVEN that the poodle is a more human aggressive breed than pitbulls! If pitbulls are so dangerous, with the thousands of them out there, why are there not MORE attacks? And why has this only been an issue for the past fifteen years or so? These are things that are not being introduced to the public. Instead, we’re hearing from people who are talking about the “pitbull” that was aggressive towards them. I have to wonder, how many were like the woman who yelled at us when her small dog came after our mix breed. Yet her dog was off leash, and was aggressive towards us, while our dog was on a leash, and did nothing until she felt threatened by this other persons dog? There are hundreds of stories like ours, and sadly, I believe it is the other side that Mr. Bryant is listening to. Lastly, why do people get these dogs? We got ours because we picked her up as a puppy from the humane society. But many people will tell you that they are so loving, and all they want to do is please their master. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would have a dog that is part pitbull. If they are so vicious, why does my dog match what the experts and other owners say about the breed, not what the media says? I would get another one in a minute if we were to lose our pet. Sadly, there is another group who do get them for the wrong reasons, because of the reputation. And banning the dog will do nothing to help, because this is the same group that had German Shepards when they were the “dangerous dog”, then rottweillers, then Dobermans. Please, continue to tell the truth. That is all responsible dog owners, pitbull and other breeds, really ask. Thank you, Jamie
