Question Possible Cushings?????

I have a 2 year old Bichon Frise. All of a sudden she starting eatting her dry food like it was her last meal. She was always a picky eatter and only ate a little dry food. I usually give her wet food also. Anyway, she started eatting a lot and drinking a lot causing her to urinate and poop a lot. She has woken me up 5 times each time to go out. Also she has not been acting right lately. She is sniffing outside like a maniac. She is also having a lot of accidents in the house which she never did. I would take her out and she would do nothing to bring her back inside to poop not even a minute later. She has also started panting. I took her to vet. They tested her stool, which came out fine, and did blood work. According to the vet, her blood work was fine. There was just one problem. She has a slightly elevated liver enzyme. The vet did not feel this to be a problem and said she doubted whether this was Cushings. I have done a lot of research on Cushings and am 50=50 as to my opinion. She has a lot of the symptoms, however, this did not come on gradually, this came on all of a sudden. Also about a month ago she had a rash on her neck (my fault- I left her sweater on for several days because she was cold, however, when I took sweater off she had a large rash). I put cream on it and it healed fine, but in one spot she was missing some fur. This is another sign of cushings that's why I am mentioning it. I am so confused. I am going to take her for another test to rule out cushings in a few days. In the meantime, I am looking for a little reassurance, hoping someone out there can identify this problem as something else. She constantly wants to go outside to "sniff". Otherwise, she is still very playful and energetic. She does not have a pot belly either. Could this be a hormonal problem? If so would it have shown up on blood work? I appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thank you.

I had to read up on this.To be honest,I never knew what it was.But it's hard to tell with your little one.But I did find this link..Maybe it could help you some more. She does have a few signs of it.But the rash would be on differents parts of her body.

I don't want to frighten you, but my dog exhibited signs like this just before he became suddenly very ill.

IF the vet is unsure with blood/urine work, I suggest you may want to spend the money to do some xrays and look for tumours. If tumours are found, follow through with an ultrasound.

Rusty was thought to have simple pancreatitis or pssble cushings. It was cancer, lots of tumours affecting major organs and his adrenal gland.

Sorry if reading this upsets you but everything you said, reminded me of what happened to Rusty.

Thank you for the information. The more I am reading the more I am leaning toward a tumor. She is also acting very wierd lately. definitely not herself and is showing signs of neurological disorder. I have an appointment with vet on Monday. Please pray for Heidi.

What do you mean a neurological disorder?

Is she leaning or getting weak on one side. Does her gaze sometimes look like she is staring into space? Her body go weaK and she falls down? Don't let her climb stairs by herself if there is ANY weakness.

Watch her eyes closely if she begins to look like she is in a 'stupor' take her to the emergency clinic ASAP! Eyes may dart back and forth or have a spinning motion to them, you may also begin to see whites of the eyes and they make look like they're bulged, and not normal.

Find out NOW where there is a specialist in internal medicine. Emphasize to whomever you see next that you want xrays done immediately! It's better to be safe then sorry.

I will pray, please keep me posted.

My thoughts are with you.

Stay strong.

Luba

My Bichon is fine

I first want to thank everyone who replyed to my e-mails. To make a long story short, I took Heidi to another vet who did a thorough exam. This vet felt very sure (just like other vet) that it was not cushings even though she had all of the symptoms. Upon further examination, Heidi yelped when the dr. raised her leg. Dr. concluded she was in pain and that hip may be dislocated. Amazingly enough that evening, Heidi had a 90% turnaround for the better. Although she was still having accidents in the house she was 100% better. I think when the dr. moved her leg, she must have moved her hip back into position. The poor dog must have been in pain. That's why she was panting and not acting right. As far as her increased appetite, still can't explain it, but she is not devouring her food like she was and today she did not have not one accident. Thank you for your prayers.
