New Member saying HI!!!
Hello Everyone!! My name is Meghan and I wanted to introduce myself and my Olde English Bulldog Bella. Bella is five years old (six tomorrow) and we live in Florida. I am having allergy related issues with Bella (chewing paws, scratching ears, itchy skin) and I feel like I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I feel bad for her because all she does all day is chew or scratch her paws, ears, and skin. I am hoping to find someone who has had the same problems with their dog and that can help me out.

Welcome to pets.ca Bellalou , have you been to the vet with her ? Did your vet mentioned Vanectyl ? One of my golden has food and seasonal allergies and has to be on Vanectyl all summer long.

Yes I feel like I live at the vet. She goes at least once every two months and everytime they send us away with cephalexin and they tell me to give her benadryl. I also have her on a special dog food because they told me that she may have food allegies. The new food helps a little but not much. The vet did a allergy panel and they told me that she was allergic to the enviroment. The vet has never suggested Vanectyl (only Benadryl or steroids) What is Vanectyl?

Welcome to the board, bellalou.
I think Vanectyl has a steroid component (prednisolone, the active form of prednisone) in it...but I also think it's available only in Canada. Have you tried a steroid to see if it gives her any relief?

I have tried steroids but only for short-term relief. The vet will give it to her every now and then, but they send us home with only a weeks worth and that works great for that week but then the same issues come back. Can I use prednisone tablets for more than one week at a time? When she is on that it does give her alot of relief.

Steroids can be used longer, but they have some really nasty side effects, so if you can find something else that works, you'd be well ahead of the game. Any chance you could get in to see a specialist? Any Veterinary Schools in your area? They usually have allergists on staff.

Welcome to pets.ca and would love to see some pics of Bella.
Is the "special dog food" one of the vet recommended brands like Medi-Cal or Science Diet? If so, I would switch her to one of the grain-free kibbles. |
