The last of the 2009 Hazel Run hummers...

My little buddies are about gone for the year.
The large feeders are packed away already and only one small feeder
hangs out in the hummingbird garden for the stragglers.

Here are some of the last of the little sweethearts to pass through.

Enjoy!

When another bird gets too close, there is a lot of displaying.
Any time you see a tail spread like this, there's another bird getting too close.

I never would have thought that they each have such individual markings/colors. Just gorgeous .

Don't you worry Hazel, they'll all be back with even more friends and family next Summer . Everyone else, now would be a good time to start investing in sugar stocks .

Even now, I have three bags of sugar in the cupboard! Our sugar bills were rivaling our vet bills for a while...so yes, I'd say sugar stocks would be a good investment!

The adults are hard to tell apart, LP--the fems all look the same, give or take the length of the neck and the condition of the feathers; and the males all look the same, too, give or take the same things. Adolescent fems all look the same. But adolescent males have different necklace bead patterns so they can sometimes be told apart.

I can usually tell when migration begins because the adult birds I see are very nervous when I approach. Since the local adults grow very tolerant of me, the nervous birds must be strangers, meaning that the locals have moved on and new adults are passing through. Otherwise, everyone looks so much like everyone else, I'd never be able to tell.

Chris, I'm ecstatic that you were able to download the pics! Some of them are a little bigger in size than I usually post.

Gorgeous pictures of the hummers . Mine have gone away as well, we don't seem to get the migratory ones like you and the others disappear around the end of july .

I wonder if you're at the northern end of their range then? I don't know much about western hummers

I don't know . My friend in Victoria has hummers that she feeds all through the winter. Victoria is just across the water from us on Vancouver Island but it is just a wee bit warmer then we are here.

Holy catz!! All winter? omg, I'd die of exhaustion! Although it's sad to see them go, it's nice not to have a fridge full of nectar bottles!

It would be kind of cool to have one or two flitting around in the basement. I could hang feeders and we always overwinter the impatiens down there. They bloom all winter long...just perfect for a hummer or two!
