Puppy Obedience Classes - best age to enroll

We are getting a new puppy in August, she will be 6 weeks then. My questions are this:
1.) How old does the puppy have to be to start a puppy in obiedience training?
2.) I live in Edmonton, can anyone suggest a food training facility?

Thanks in advance!!
Katrina

Where are you getting your puppy from. Most breeders will not allow a puppy to leave his mum that early.

She'll be just over 6 weeks, and the breeder said that is the absolute earliest she'll let her go.

It would be in the best interest of the pup and your family, to leave the pup with its mother for at least 2 more weeks. Honestly, the difference between some good and some bad pups is when they leave their mother. They learn all sorts of things from their mother, that they just can't learn at home i.e. nipping, biting, playing etc..... I know you are anxious to get the pup, but be patient and you will be much happier.

Most obedience schools will take pups starting at 8 weeks.

In many places it's illegal to sell puppies before they are 8 weeks old,and no reputable breeder would do so.

The extra two weeks are very important to a puppy's development.

I don't mean to be rude, but that isn't what I was asking about. I was asking about obedience classes. As for the age of the puppy, we've spoken with numerous breeders and every single one said they will let them go at 6 weeks. As well when I lived at home, we had both our dogs bred through the breeder we rec'd them from and the puppies were taken at 6 weeks.

I believe pups can start puppy socialization classes after they've completed their vaccinations.

Sorry

I know you have said you were not inquirying about the age to get your puppy but I just have to say...

I contribute ALOT of my dogs GREAT behaviour to the fact they were with there mom until 9 weeks. I have seen other puppies that were taken sooner and as stated before problems like nippping are an issue with MOST pups that are taken sooner. It is hard to wait I understand but in the long run it will save you so many frustrations. Please atleast think about it

The NASAP sometimes has puppy obedience classes in Edmonton. You can see their site here and their contact information is here.

Hope this helps. If you search the internet you may come up with something to. If you search for "Edmonton Kennel and Obedience Club" you may find something, and if there is one it may have an obedience class you can go to.

This is the Edmonton Kennel Club's page.

I forgot to mention, puppies who are brought home at about six weeks can have serious emotional problems and behavioral problems. For the good of your new dog you shouldn't bring him home until he is at least 8 weeks old.

Lots of places have Puppy PhD courses for puppies as early as 8 weeks, as long as they've had their vaccinations. I'm going to call a friend of mine to find the name of the obedience place she took her dog to, worked wonders on this dog!!! I'll get back to ya soon with a name and number!!!

Ok, its called "Grand Paws" (not sure how I forgot that, its very clever!!) The number is (780) 729 -PAWS. They do have a puppy class, I checked out their website!! http://www.grandpaws.ca/

Good luck!!

There is no way in heck I would enroll an 8 week old puppy in a class with other puppies. An 8 week old puppie is way too susceptible to way to many things to be in contact with other dogs you know nothing about. Any responsible vet will tell you to limit contact with other dogs until your puppy has had all of it's shots.

While I am glad that all of the breeders you talked to told you that it was just fine to take your puppy from it's family at 6 weeks of age. How handy that is just the time you can go get it. Most behaviorists will tell you that removing a puppy from it's litter before 8 weeks of age is not good for the dog's future mental health. But hey, I am sure your breeder knows what they are talking about.
