My 1yr. 9months golden stopped eating help !!!

Hi, I have a 1 year and 9 months old golden who has not been eating his food at all. This started couple months back but then he use to eat after sometime that day. But now he doesn't eat the dry food or the canned food. I took him to the vet he says he looks fine but still he prescribed some medication (he hates it we have to force the medication down his mouth). I am very worried about him i can clearly see he is getting skinnier and he has lost that energy he used to have now his energy comes in short bursts and then he quickly lies down and is somber. please help !!

Have you tried to change his food to something he may like?

Did the vet run any tests? What medication did he give your dog and what was it for?

i am not sure what test he ran, the medications he gave for the dog is for if there are for giving him the nutrients he need in a day they said they will call again to check on how he is doing but it is a struggle just to make him eat the medication. We did try changing the food from royal canine to beneful to blue buffalo, to natures choice but nothing works

Did they take an x ray to confirm if he has an obstruction? blood tests? stool tests? Your bill should indicate what they did and what for?

Have you tried to entice him/her to eat? There are lots of ways to get the meds into him. Try sticking it into a hotdog or a piece of cheese? Sometimes people will use the pill pockets for cats and they seem to work? Adding something stinky too might make him interested.

Are you going back to the vets for a follow up?

How much food does he eat per day and how long has this been going on? How much weight loss has there been?

I would think about consulting another vet for another opinion. Especially if this vet isnt telling you anything. You know your dog best and thats whats important.

Did you look to see what the meds are that you are giving him? What is the name of the meds?

Never met a golden that refuses food. Get another opinion.

I'd get another opinion as well, SullenScreamer. In fact, I'd likely go right to a veterinary internist if there's one near you. How are your dog's stools?

I believe a second opinion is important. We are not Vets here. Maybe an obstruction?????? Has you dog eaten things he should not have before? If there is significant weight loss a Vet visit should be a number one on the list.Keep us posted please and good luck with this. patti

I was more interested in consistency... Are they formed? Does your dog have bouts of diarrhea? The reason I ask is that we had a dog about the same age as yours that stopped eating over the course of a few months and then had a critical episode of what turned out to inflammatory bowel disease.

Mustard yellow and semi liquid doesn't sound normal.

What about trying him on a boiled hamburger/rice formula for a week? Don't know a dog who doesn't like hamburger & rice and it may help increase his appetite for eating again not to mention his strength.

Mustard yellow poop indicates whatever food he is ingesting is going through his system way too fast. You need to take him to a different veterinarian.
