Question preparing cat to travel to the UK

Hi, I am moving to the UK and would like to bring my cat with me. I've been to the Animal, Health and welfare website (www.defra.gov.uk), and they tell me that I need to have him microchipped (and bring my own skanner because they're different in the UK), vaccinated against rabbies, take a blood test to ensure that the vaccine worked, get a PETS certificate, and treat him for ticks and tapeworms. I was wondering if anyone has done this, what their experience was, and approximately how much it will cost.

Also, what do I need to know before I take him on a plane?

Thanks a lot

I haven't done it but know people who have. You need to find out from the airline exactly the specifications of the carrier needed and if the cat can be brought into the plane with you or put in the cargo hold and if he can have food and water, or at least water.

Don't give sedatives or tranquilizers, as these can do more harm than good.

Good luck and it's nice that you are taking your cat with you!!

I agree, kudos to you for taking the cat,not dumping him like so many others.
Other than the papers and vax's,the most important is the quality of the carrier, make sure it's completely secure and ask questions, lot's of questions of the airline!!!
The flight to the UK is about 8 hours, right???
It's going to be stressful for the cat,but so much better than the alternative.
I cannot see what good microchipping will do,if you are the only one with the scanner to identify your cat,it's not like you could not identify him
I am hoping someone else here can give you more advice, the testing for parasites should not be expensive nor the flight.
Good luck and thank's for taking your kitty!

I could only add.......When you put your cat in the carrier......it may seem safe and closed but as an extra precaution tie it shut on the bottom and top of the cage. These cages seem really secure but you never know, and it's better safe than sorry. Please do this....even if your cage is brand new and you THINK it is ok no need to .....these people thought their cage was just fine, and by all rights should have been but look what happened...

Lost Airport cat

Dont let this happen to your furry friend
Very good of you to take your pet with you, instead of leaving it behind like so many other do your a very kind person
