Vali, our New Rescue Puppy

Introducing our first rescue puppy, Vali'. He is an american bulldog male, pure white, deaf in one ear.

Sadly, the BYB turned him to my rescue when most families were not interested in him due to his coloring. (Apparently no one wants a white american bulldog.) The rescue took him in, and after a few days discovered he was deaf in one ear. They contacted me a week ago to start training him due to his special needs, and...I fell in love.

We adopted him yesterday. Here he is!

Thanks Molly. It IS very busy here, but thankfully we have an awesome dog walker a block or two away from our house that we adore and trust - and lately she's been a huge help to us.

Vali is fitting in wonderfully though! He's even crying to let us know he has to go out which is AWESOME.

She is beautiful!!!

Is she like an albino? I notice her eyes are blue and pink around her lids and I have heard that sometimes albino animals are blind or deaf. She is abolutely gorgeous though! I can sure understand why u adopted her.

TQ, thanks!! And nope, he's not albino. (Notice also his black spots on his nose and ears). Just pure white, with one blue eye. He's deaf on the side that he has the blue eye though, but he's not blind. Which is good because it doesn't seem to be hindering him at all at this point.

could it be that the byb knew he was deaf in one ear and didn't want to deal with the complaints when soemone bought him and figured it out?

He is a beauty, I can see why you adopted him

He's adorable. Funny that no one wanted a white bulldog. The white one would be the first that we chose, but then again, we tend to lean towards different/unusual (i.e. White Shepherd and CO)

oh bailey he is just adorable. i'd have gone after the white one too. My nephew went out of his way to get a solid white alpha blueblood bulldog. I'm leaning towards the breeder knowing he had hearing issues too. Their stupidity is your family and this little ones gain so pffffft on them. Oh and yay for rescuing him..

The deaf thing does have something to do with his coloring. Kinda like the White great danes or the white/grey danes have a HUGE chance of being either blind or deaf.. BYB's KNOW this but sell them as "Rare" to get big bucks..

Same thing with aussies and such.. They do merle on merle breedings resulting in double merles which is at the expense of the puppies.. They almost always turn out with either hearing problems or seeing problems. YOu wont find one reputable breeding doing this kind of *****.

But your puppy is ADORABLE!! I loove american bulldogs soo much! I cant wait to watch him grow

Thanks everyone!! He sure is fitting in great. Kiley adores him, she squeals and points whenever she sees him and can't cuddle him enough! Finally the kittens are getting some relief.

It's very possible Melei'sMom that the BYB found out he was deaf in one ear and didn't want to deal with it or as you mentioned - deal with pple bringing him back after a few months, which landed this poor guy in a rescue. I was told by the rescue however that more often than not - even though AB's tend to be white (or a lot of white) people generally pick the puppies that have brindle/black/or tan patches on them, and aren't interested in pure white puppies. So the breeder used the excuse that no one wanted him b/c of his coloring, which may have been true - but who knows.

Either way, we think he's perfect!!

Thanks AG and Bendy!!

I've never owned a bully breed before, so this is a first for our family! So far, we're loving it. Vali has been thus far quite a differente experience than Bailey ever was. She was all energy and bouncing, and Vali is much more low key and cuddly.

Does anyone know if there are members here that have/had deaf dogs/puppies? I'm just wondering if there are any tests that we can do to establish how deaf he is in his left ear - if it is complete or if he could possibly hear certain tones? Would our vet be the best person for this job?

Vali is gorgeous!!!! I just want to steal him

Check out: www.deafdogs.org

I belong to a boxer website, and unfortunately they say about 25% of white boxers are born deaf. Luckily my Stella wasn't one of them. But everyone on there that has deaf dogs has recommended this site. There is also a specific test that can be done on dogs to check their hearing, the BAER test. Not sure if all vets perform this or not, so you may need to find a specialist. Good luck!

Awwwww what a sweetheart...

I have to agree. I see more pure white ABDs then any other colour..And they are not deaf...But I bet you he is deaf on the side where his blue eye is...I have a pure white cat with blue eyes..He is deaf..We adopted him at 8 weeks..I realized something was wrong after 2 weeks of having him..I did a few tests..Then took hom to the vet..I did a ton of research. Also has to do with genetics. And white isn't actually a colour..White cats with BLUE eyes are prone to being deaf. And my guy is deaf as deaf can be..If he had one green eye and one blue eye, he would be deaf on the side of the blue eye. Just like danes. The deaf ones usually will have the ice blue eyes..As for how deaf Vali is...I'm sure he has no hearing what so ever on the left..And I'm sure he has great hearing in his other...So since he isn't completely deaf, there should be no problem in training him, like any other pup.

You can do your own test. When he is sleeping, either clap or take a pot and hit it with a wooden spoon..See the reaction you get...But do this on the right side.

I highly doubt that the so called BYB knew about the deafness..BYB's don't know much period.. Maybe it had something to do with the different colour eyes..Who knows.

Hey Bailey, I got some info for you:

(from one person)

If they want a real hearing test, they could do an ABR, auditory brainstem response, just like with a human baby. I know UVA does/did them, but I have NO idea who else would.

(from the deaf/blind-dog guru of the universe)

There is also the BAER test : http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/testing/baer.htm
The critter site is:

http://www.lsu.edu/deafness/deaf.htm

But there are some tests you can do at home for no cost at all (BAER is right pricey especially when you know pup is deaf).

What is the problem with white? My cousin describes it brilliantly at our http://www.MagicalWorldOfLethalWhites.freeservers.com site. Any white deaf dog, I suspect immediately.

the ear is actually 3 ears. The outer, the middle and the inner. The hairs on the inner ear 'wave' the sound waves to the brain and transform those impulses into sound. When the inner ear hairs have no pigment, no sound is transmitted and the hairs shrivel up and die. No sound. None. Ever.

I would be remiss not to mention ULF. Deaf children have resonded to ULF. What is ULF? Ultra-low frequency. I have had 3 profoundly deaf dogs, two still living. ALL of them respond to ULF. How did I test them? Well, they tested themselves, and when I saw a reaction, THEN I started my ULF research. Elephants can communicate 25 MILES!! by ULF. I had no clue until my Gabriel started barking while I watched an elephant program in which the elephants were communicateing ULF over that same 25 miles. I sat up straight and was astonished. I have researched ULF and deafness and the only links I have found is that deaf children have 'heard' ULF. So did my Gabriel. I spoke to a young man at a rescue even tabout this. We talked about the EXTREME possibilities. We talked about the fences that encircle my yard and wiring them to transmit a ULF. This is such an exciting prospect, and you heard it here first! The first thing that comes to my mind is VIBRATIONS. My Gabriel knows every single move I make, by vibrations. And electrical impulses. To that end, Gabriel astonishes me daily, with every move I make. Every single heartbeat transmits an electrical impulse and I trully believe that is how Gabriel tracks me. When mama's mad, he knows that as well, probably because the impulses are coming fast and hard. These are simlly my own theories, from a life of experience.

(note: Gabriel is also completely blind as well as deaf)

Some 'experiments' she can try: A can of coins. Rattle on each side of head and determine the difference in reaction. On the other side of the room, on either side of the head, call pup's name, at different ranges equidistant from each side each time. Clapping hands behind head and see which way the head swivels.

One sided deafness with sight to me is absolutely no handicap at all. Your recall has to be visual first and auditory second. Never off lead, never out of a fenced yard. If pup has hearing in one ear, this is an excellent time to start the training, and the first is basic obedience (see the tips in the Deafblind primer 101 in this forum). (you can find this in the Blind and Deaf section of the forum at http://handicappedpet.net/helppets/index.php)The second thing to start is the DANGER command. This will have to be visual as you can never place youself properly in an emergency. This can be taught on lead on a walk. As an intersection is approached, DANGER. As pulling on lead may jeopardize pupper's continued existence, DANGER, well you get the idea! Very excited for her and THANK YOU for saving this life!

Thankyou so much BF for all that helpful information and thanks to your contacts as well! Huge help!

Quote:

For this part of the test - if I clapped on the left side (deaf side) should I expect him to swivel his head in the direction of his good ear, or at all?

Quote:

Curious if I could attain more information about the specifics regarding this command?

I certainly need to do more specific tests this week to find out more about his health concerns regarding the deaf ear. I'm beginning to have concerns he can't hear at all, but again - it may just be bad timing on my part (calling his name when his head is turned to me with his deaf ear). My reason is because DH and I are noticing that Vali will only come when he physically sees us bending down and clapping. If he's distracted or facing away from us and we clap, he doesn't look.
I will try out these tests tonight and keep you posted.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help. This is a totally new training experience for me!!

Thanks so much! I'm just reading the Pup 101 post right now, and I lovelovelove the idea of a vest for Vali. That's such a great point when he's on a walk, to let others know about it so they don't startle him.

I will definitely join, it looks like I'd get a lot of help there!! Thanks!!
