how to start a doggy play group??

Hi everyone,
I am fairly new to my community and want to meet other dog owners, so we can have doggy play dates, hikes etc. Also just a good way to meet like minded people.
Any ideas on how I could go about doing this? There's no dog park here (although its generally acceptable to use the baseball diamond after hours, as long as you clean up after your dog.. its all fenced in) and there are only about 5000 people who live here. Keep in mind a lot of people here are of the mentality that owning a dog means tying it up in your backyard for the rest of its life... or worse, just letting it roam around town....
Does anyone here belong to a doggy play group?

Good Morning Mollywog, IMO I would put up notices in your neighborhood grocery stores and drug stores asking like minded people if they would like to join a group for puppy play dates etc. If you don't want to put your phone number you can set up an email address where you can all set up times to get together. Nothing better then to be able to socialize our dogs then letting them meet and play. pbp
