Confused on what food to switch too

Hi, I'm new here and have been reading all about dogs foods but am still confused about whats the best food for my pup.

I have a 6 month old puppy that my parents adopted on Nov 29 for me as a christmas present. They wanted me to have a "small" dog but we walked out of the pound with a pit/shep or lab mix.

He is on the Science Diet large breed food right now.
and I am confused about this food. I have my vet and a few other people tellin' me its very good and then I have others saying it's just a high priced low quality food.

I've been wanting to change his food for a few weeks now because Science Diet is pricey but I do want him to have a good/high quality food.

I've read Innova, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae, Blue Buffalo, California Natural, Natural Balance, Nutro Natural Choice.

All are good ones? plus Blue Buffalo, Nutro and Natural Choice, are sold at petsmart.. Which I like since I don't live too far from it.

But what food should I swhitch him to?
which one would be best and not so expensive.

I think the Canidae would be the best value.

I can speak from experience that the Canidae works well for my dogs (lab/rott mixes) and it works out to one 40 lb bag every 3-4 weeks for the 2 of them-way cheaper than the one 30 lb bag a week of Purina they'd be eating.

Hi there. Welcome to the board. I see that you are a fellow Floridian. If you have a hard time finding Canidae and end up looking for something else, go to PetSupermarket -- they sell both Wellness and Merrick. I would stay away from the Nutro. I know with my dog she didn't do well on it at all. She threw up a lot and I know a lot of other members dogs had the same reaction. By the way, we need to see pictures -- lots of them!

Blue Buffalo, Nutro and Natural Choice are not the best foods either although they are better than Science Diet.

I agree with Prin that Canidae would be your best choice. It is a good food and the best value. It's not available where I live so I feed Innova and it's $56for a 33lb. bag in Canada.

If you can't find it, look for the Chicken Soup. It's a great food for a great price. Very reasonable.

Um... It's not a "great" food... Maybe a good value, but some of the ingredients are a little icky, like "ocean fish meal" and "egg product"...

It's better than it was before though...

Well, I think their cat formula is great... my cats are doing fabulous on it. We tried Innova and Felidae before it. I wasn't thrilled. I know dogs doing well on it too. My boy is allergic to the rice though.

Well, IMO, it's better than nutro anyway... Just be careful with the ingredient changes though... They can really mess with a doggy. I don't know if they intend to change the formula again, but it really seems quite different than it used to be...
