15 year old English Cocker Spaniel walking tight circles
My 15 year old English Cocker is deaf and nearly blind. He takes Rimadyl daily for pain in his legs. When he is not sleeping he is either pacing or walking in a tight circle. He will walk until he drops, I have to physically take him and get him to lay down. Is this because of senile dymentia, pain? He still has a good appetite, has occasional accidents in the house. My goal with him is not to allow him any unnecessary suffering in the last days of his life.

Hi Colonel,
I hate to be the one to suggest this but...he may indeed have some kind of dymentia, or the signals in his brain may not be working in accordance with his muscles....or it could be a bunch of other things that happen to very old dogs. If it gets much worse you may consider putting him to sleep....it seems like his last days are already here and he very well may be suffering. I wonder if others in this chatroom feel the same. I know this must be a tough time for you. I wish you courage. Best of luck Uncle Fester |

Uncle Fester, thank you so much for your reply. I agree that I may need to consider putting my English Cocker to sleep. I keep hanging on to the fact that he still eats heartily, and wants to socially be in the same room at all times with us, his little tail still goes a mile a minute. Intellectually I feel that I should put him down while I have control over the situation and he is not under extreme pain or anxiety. But in my heart I hang on to him feeling that he is not ready and I am not ready. My worse nightmare is having an emergency situation with him arise and then I have lost the control, every day it plays on my mind. Your right I will need courage!
Thanks again, Colonel's Mom |
