Yes, this product is shown all the time on television - by the people who manufacture it! Many things are advertised on television by the very people who make their living from selling it, so of course they will praise this product. Since THEY are selling it, you don't really expect them to say "Our Pedigree is crappy food full of cheap fillers that will probably cause allergies or other problems in your dog" do you? McDonalds advertises heavily, but that doesn't mean that a steady diet of Big Macs would be good for you, does it? You don't believe everything you see on ads do you? You're a smart girl and I know you can understand this. |

Even crappy food full of filler and 'by-products' seems to be "approved' by vets. I supplement my cats' food with omega-rich oil, even though the vet said it wasn't necessary. Like doctors who know nothing about nutrition, vets are not necessarily well-informed about the merits of different foods. Best to do your own research, IMHO.

Pedigree is also being discussed in the General Forum. Seems it has different ingredients depending on the country. Melanie prefers it for her dogs in Australia. Perhaps it is a good option in England also? I think people tend to be emotional about dog food!!! Actually, when I first heard that Science Diet was utter crap, my first reaction was that they were wrong (fortunately I kept it to myself and then checked the ingredients and to my horror found that it really IS crap!!) This is my last post on this thread... not that it hasn't been fun!!! LadyD, how about finishing up this thread with an update on your gassy pooch?

You really weren't treating people "equally" when you lashed out irrationally at the beginning of this thread. And as far as I can see, you are picking apart every word that Luba posts, then responding in length to relatively innocuous statements. It is YOU that is keeping this little snit alive, and frankly, it has made this a most tedious thread. The original poster has not even returned. I can't imagine why.... Please show us the maturity that you feel you have- by stopping this bickering and scrutinizing right now. |

Well said CF! The difference between "not an adult" and "adult" is maturity. If you think you're discriminated against because you're a kid, wait til you have the responsibilities of an adult. Enjoy being a kid for awhile and take advantage of this time to learn something and prepare for being an adult. None of us knew everything at 14! You're too young to have a closed mind.

When will this thread be locked? Why do these threads that cause such tense and uncomfortable posts remain open? How can anyone possibly benefit from these types threads?

Thanks moon.
No threads should HAVE to be locked, but I know it does come down to that. I just don't get the bickering back and forth. I've made a contribution to this thread because I can't stand disrespect but of course it didn't stop there. I hope the OP gives us an update on a NEW thread. |

Heidiho, for your information, I have tried EVERY possible typ of dog food, if you trying to insinuate that I am poor, then you are sadly mistaken. Tally likes Pedigree and I'm keeping her on it. Now I'm going to do everyone a favour and stop this thread. If everyone agrees, don't reply to this message, expect with the gas subject. I'm sure if anyone does reply, that will mean they obviously want the fight to go on.

I'm feeding myself, my son and my dogs on a limited income right now. But the kids are all very healthy, so I must be doing something right . I tell you what, though: after being a member on this site for a little while now, and reading all of the very strong negative opinions about certain brands - whenever I grab a bag of less-than-top-of-the-line dog food, I feel like helicopters are going to appear overhead and fix me in their spotlight while alarms sound! LOL Surely I'm not the only person on here who can't always afford to feed their pets the VERY VERY BEST (be it bagged food or home cooked or BARF diet) ? |

Cactus Flower, don't worry about it. Tally was on the BARF diet but here in the UK not much is known about it. She hated eating it and it made her constipated. Our vet told us to put her on a brand of food, which we did. She now enjoys her meals and her constipation has stopped.

But we needn't feed them the VERY VERY WORST food out there either.(Ol'Roy, Pedigree, Purina) There is a middle ground. And don't forget, you feed much less of good food than you do of crappy food so the cost evens out! Less poop too - a good thing when you have a big dog. |

I know I'm not Lucky but I thought I would say something to your question...
We've talked about carbs and LC diets and such and the main reason for cutting them out of your diet is because they make you hungrier... Corn = Carbs. Does that sound right? Edited... Eating protein makes you feel fuller. So the better food being more meat than corn makes it more satisfying. |

CF, the answer is that the good food is much more digestible, so the dog uses much more of it = you feed less.
With cheap food, all the corn and some other fillers cannot be processed by the dog's digestive system, so just passes out of the body. All animals who eat very low quality food (like herbivores) must eat large amounts of it to get enough nourishment. |

CF,I know what you mean, some cat-foods like Wellness is about $24 for a 2 kilo bag(I could be wrong on the weight, but it's not a large bag).
I adore my cats, but I rather buy an equally good food for $15 for a 3 kilo bag. The same goes for canned food,I refuse to pay $2 for a small can of cat-food. Pet-foods is a HUGE business and I think most of us do our best to feed the best for our pets. But some things are WAAAY out of line, like a bag of cat-litter for $35 made out of some sort of grain. I spend an average of $200/month on cat-stuff,birdseeds,peanuts etc...

Ok, now that makes sense. Thank you Sneaky and Lucky!
You're right, Chico, it is a huge industry/business. I remember comparing ingredients on two different brands of dog food. They were exactly the same, in the same order- but there was a ten dollar difference in price! |

CF, it IS confusing when there are so many brands out there, all promising wonderful effects. Choose something your puppy likes and what you think is right - taste matters too! ( woudl you like to spend 15+ years on the same food that you hate eg sprouts? )

A lifetime of SPROUTS yeeeeeeeeuck! Oh I'd rather be in LABOR than eat sprouts! LOL
Hopefully nothing I give my kidz is as bad as that! But yes taste matters, absolutely. It's frustrating when I get a different brand, and Raj likes it but Choe hates it. |

I like sprouts... I guess I'm weird, hubby does too and that makes him even more weird considering he eats nothing at all healthy! (besides sprouts of course)

Another thing,I do not always buy the same food,I am not sure if it is good for my cats or not,but I am thinking in human terms(I'll stay away from the sprouts )who wants to eat meat-loaf for the rest of their lives
So far I must have tried at least 10 different kinds of food and no ill effects to my cats. At the moment,They LOVE "chiken-soup-for-catlovers-soul"next month they might like something else and it certainly is a problem if one cat likes it and another does not,but then I'll have two dry-food-bowls.
