Separating Shastas

Since I'm gearing up for fall cleanup and garden damage control as soon as the baby is born and I'm back on my feet.... I need some advice about my shasta daisies!! They seem a bit crowded as it's almost impossible to keep them watered and I know you're supposed to divide these at least every couple of years... But does anyone know the best time of year to divide them?

We have very very very mild winters here (most of my plants grow through the winter.. only things like hibiscus or other severely tropical plants go dormant most years...) so would it be okay to divide them in the fall? Also -- how rough can you be with them? Do I have to be careful and untangle roots or will they survive cutting the roots into sections -- such as when you divide daylilies, irises or mondo grass?

Thanks!

I've devided w/o a problem just make sure they get enough of a root system and you can cut right through the roots.

Transplant shock is bound to happen just dont' do it when they are in bloom and you should be fine.

Prewater the hole you're putting them in and I think you should be just fine

My Shastas are almost impossible to kill,I split them every spring and give some away or stick them in an empty spot somewhere(I'm running out!)
All my friends have,Hostas,Daisies,Blackeyed Susans and Cone-flowers from me...they tend to take over the garden..
