Suet feeders

Came up with a great way to serve suet without having 1/2 of it spilled on the ground or gobbled up by the starlings (or my dogs!). Squished it down into a tubular peanut feeder, its great as the small birds and woodpeckers can cling to it and easily get a beakful through the tiny holes without spilling. I bring it every night and pack more suet down with a wooden mallet.

what a neat idea! The STarlings are so greedy! What about the Jays though? I have Stellar Jays, a Hairy Woodpecker and a Downy Woodpecker, plus chickadees and other smaller birds at the suet feeder - would they be able to get their fill? The Jays and the Hairy are about the same size as the Starlings - or bigger..

Suet feeders

The starlings can get some but not devour ALL like they used to, the jays don't seem to like this feeder but the downey and hairy woodpeckers cling to it and extract beakfulls. Watched a starling trying to chase away a hairy but it wouldn't move, was clinging to the new feeder and standing his ground until finally the starling flew off. The little guys - chickadees, nuthatches do great with this, and have had some finches pecking at it also. It really saves refilling every 2-3 days without so much falling on the ground, just have to squish down and top up about 1 inch a day.

Does anyone have a homemade Suet recipe???
It can get awfully expensive with suet on top of the birdseeds,corn-on-the cob and peanuts for the squirells.

"Dollarama" lol. $1,- for a block of suet is affordable.

But now I have to find a peanutfeeder!

Also, how do you squich a square suet block into a stocking-like net feeder?

I'm just soooo fed up with those starlings as well! Strange though, in Europe, if you have jays, you never see a starling! To the point that many municipalities will play jay-cried over the city loudspeaker system to get those irritating things to fly away. Seems the bluejays don't have that same scary effect on them ...

Suet feeder

This is such a great idea. I have never thought of doing this. I have suet feeders but they are messy to maintain. I will try your idea for sure. Thanks!
