Want Help: Chronic Kidney Failure

Disease: Chronic Kidney Failure

I am a owner for 4 year lovely Golden Lebrador and her name is 'Amber'. The bad new is she has been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney failure by my Vet Trust me we all broke down into tears when we heard this news. I have been taking her to my vet for past 2 months. The problem is she has lost more than 6 KG of her weight and she is no more active like she used to be before. She sleeps whole day and drinks a lot of water (Which is good as per online articles). The problem with Amber is she eats food for 2-3 days and then suddenly she stops eating and becomes very weak. She has stopped vomiting though which is a good sign.

We are doing everything we could do. I am sure she will recover as 'Miracles happen to those who believe in them'.

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl's illness, Sunil. She's beautiful . Has your vet checked for kidney stones yet? Does he/she have any idea as to what's causing the kidney failure? What are you feeding your dog now?

Hi Sunil, sorry to hear about your girls CRF Did your vet put her on a lower protien diet? I don't have any experience with doggie renal failure myself.

Chronic Renal Failure is usually found in older pets for dogs 7-8 years+, I would wonder if your 4 year old has Acute Renal Failure instead, depends on the actual cause (ingestion of toxins, injury, genetics, old age etc) of the kidney issues and how quickly the symptoms first arose, something to discuss w/your vet as it may prompt a change in treatment protocols.

What treatments are you currently using? Has your vet mentioned fluid therapy?

As for supplements there are some specifically for the kidneys, not sure if these are available in your area but worth talking to your vet about to see if any are appropriate for your pet: Azodyl, Epakitin, Renal K+, Canine Renal Support.

For the vomiting/nausea/not wanting to eat - try raising the height of the food & water dishes so that she is not bending her head down so far. In a standing position with the head lowered below the stomach this allows the excess stomach acid to travel up the throat causing the pet to feel even more nauseous and therefore reluctant to eat/drink.
