Cat shedding!

Does bathing a cat help to stop shedding?

I have heard different things about bathing cats so I wasn't sure. I have a long haired and a medium haired cat and I have the furminator which is working great but they never seem to stop shedding, even when I groom them with it constantly.

Nope, but feeding them better does.

Cats really shouldn't be bathed much unless they're therapy or show cats, Sphynx cats, or they get something on their fur. Otherwise it can actually make shedding worse because frequent bathing dries out their coat.

I agree with SCM,I have never, ever bathed a cat and I've had cats most of my life.
I also agree good food might ease the shedding, but otherwise,if you have furry animals they shed,so I think you have to get used to it.
Regular brushing, will of course minimize some shedding.

Have you thought about trimming your cat's fur? My cat, Crush, is a long hair tabby and spends some time outdoors every day (Yeah, I know, but you try to keep a former stray cat indoors 24/7 without driving the whole family and the cat crazy!). I get him shaved every spring and that seems to control the shedding tremendously. Your vet can probably recommend someone who shaves cats. Beware, lots of people will sedate cats to be shaved, so you may have to do some looking to find a groomer who won't, but it's well worth the effort. I have found that Crush's fur is much slower to grow back and doesn't seem as dense when it does. Also, make sure the groomer knows/is aware that cats' tendons are much closer to the skin than dogs', so a lion's mane, tufts from the "elbow" down and a tuft on the tail (for looks, I think) must remain. Even with this method, Crush sheds. But with the furminator once a week, its now very much under control.

All my cats shed. I do however give a lion cut to the persians for comfort only. They actually shed less (even without the grooming) than my siamese or domestics.

I cut my himalayan's fur in the spring to help with the shedding and knots, but the best thing I did was change her food to a quality canned. It made a huge difference. She is now on raw/canned.
