Can Opener - What Works for You?

Perhaps this should be in the food section but it isn't strictly about the food.

We have a not cheap, red, well known name of kitchen appliances can opener and the darn thing is a piece of junk. It's hard to start it opening and it always lifts up before the job is finished, somethimes way before. It's manual.

Do you have one that works? What is it?

We have a manual one by Kitchenaid - It's AWESOME.
looking for a pic now...
here's the pic - It's awesome because the part that you turn is large for great leverage, which means less turning which is easier on the wrist.

That's what mine IS.

I wonder if I sent a link to this thread to Kitchenaid if they would send me a replacement for my obviously defective one? It's well off warranty though.

They might - It's worth a try for sure. How long have you had it? I'd probably just call customer service though......actually email with a link might not be a bad idea.

We've had ours for about 14 months, best one we've owned.
We hate the electric ones because it's a silly use of counter space when your counters aren't that large....and the electric ones are not faster.

Must be a good two years since I bought it. It was good when I bought it but it always did seem to work best if I screwed my face up a certain way and bit my tongue.

I have one made by Good Cooks...I love it...it has big soft rubber handles and a large turning knob...it is great if you have a touch of arthritis and hand strength is an occasional issue....It is the best one I have ever found..

Longblades, I had one of the red ones also and it turned out to be not so good. Maybe the black ones are better, even though they look the same.

I have one like your. I hate electric can openers and if you lose your power and that all you have you're out of luck.

I went on the Kitchen aid website and it does not list can openers at all. Though there was a section for Culinary Gadgets that I was unable to access.

At the "Contact Us" part I could not find an email, only a phone number. I called the phone number and reached Whirlpool. Didn't know K. and W. were the same company. Nobody at the phone number knew anything about can openers and I was switched to Parts. Where I waited and waited for someone to answer till I gave up and hung up.

I quit, a mere can opener is not worth this much trouble, I'll simply try another kind. But this was a good learning experience. Our fridge and stove are Kitchenaid, happy with. Think we need a new dishwasher though, and now thinking the brand logo on the new one is NOT going to match the fridge and stove.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I will go look at some of the ones you have that work. Not the K. ones though as they seem to discriminate by colour and I cannot support a such a company.
