Cherry Eye?????
I have a male chihauhau and he was born on November 15th/03. he recently developed "cherry eye" in his left eye, this being where his third eyelid shows and can cause damage. Im wondering if it is hereditary as we have a one year health garantee pertaining to hereditary health problems. please help

I ahve heard of cherry eye's in other dogs and know they can be very painful. I am not sure if it is hereditary or not. Did the vet say whether it was or not? My problem with those 1 year promises are that I am attached to the darned little bugger so I never could have taken it back. Let me know what you find out though. That would be a good piece of info to have.

OH NO you bought it at petland? That is the problem right there. My mom used to manage a clothing store that was right next door to the petland, and their dogs were always sick and dieing. I hope you have had him checked out really really good, because the petlands so called vet check before you buy them are worthless.
Do you have a picture of the guy? I always thought they were so ugly they were cute. |

I know the feeling. Are you sure it will take surgery. I watched a show about a mastiff with cherry eyes, and it just took a strong round of antibiotics to take care of it.

well he said to use this ointment and it could solve the problem but it was a long shot. he figured it would redue swelling for the eye and that is about it , however we have postponed surgery until march in hopes that it will repair itself.

Looks like there isn't enough evidence to support it being hereditary, so you will have to pay for it. But like you said, your attached to the bugger so what else can you do!

Glad to hear you are taking care of this little pupper, and hope surgery will fix him right up! I hope you can force the pet store to pay!
For anyone reading this, yet another reason NOT to EVER buy cats or dogs at petstores. They come from horrendous situations in puppymills, and often have many hereditary defects and illness!! By buying petstore dogs, you are directly putting money into the pockets of people who cause unthinkable suffering and abuse. NEVER BUY PET STORE PUPPIES OR KITTENS!! |

There are alot of good websites that will direct you to breeders who are in good standing with whatever club your country supports. I know here in US the AKC sight lists breeders in your area, for the breed you are looking at, who are producing good quality, defect free dogs.

The AKC and CKC are part of the problem! They will give registration papers to anyone who breeds dogs that are purebred and both of the same breed.
Puppy mill puppies and puppies from Backyard breeders come with AKC/CKC reg. papers. They mean NOTHING, except that the dog is purebred, no matter how BADLY bred it is. |

Well I know of several cases were they have denied papers due to inner breeding and breeding dogs with problems. But since they are the ones that you have to go to get papers, I see no way around it. Your dog is not a pure bred no matter who their parents are if they don't have that wonderful piece of paper!

The other sad thing is alot of people don't know what these pet store puppie are all about. They don't know that they come from puppy mills.
And people just don't take the time to research and look for the licenced reputable breeders. The majority also put you on a waiting list. And you go through alot of red tape.People think all breeders are good breeders. They just think that oh they are registered, they must be good.WRONG.They are just doing it for the money. They don't bother getting them geneticly tested,no health guarentees.Parents aren't x-rayed.The list goes on. It took me months before I got my very first GSD.Went to the dog shows.Talked to the breeders.Went to go see them. How the kennels looked.Checked the parents.Asked alot of questions. And was asked alot of questions. My Cujo was with us till he was 13.Yukon and Tron also came from her. People just need to be educated.
