seizures in a Jack Russell

We have a 6 year old Jack Russell. She began to have seizures about a month ago. She has had 4 that we know of. What can we do for her?

For something like this you have to go to a vet. Your dog may be epileptic in which case he may very well need medication or other treatments.

She was examined by a vet, and he said to let the seizures go, as long as they were infrequent and mild in duration. His advice was that medication could potentially cause more problems than it would solve.

I don't think 4 seizures in 1 month (that you know of) is infrequent at all.

One of my dogs is epileptic and the meds help.

Unless these seizures are VERY mild and it doesn't bother you to witness them, I would get a second opinion from another vet.

We had a behavioral specialist visit our JRT because he was displaying signs of obsessive, compulsive, and some agression. The specialist thought that he was having seizures. What the symptoms does your dog have? We had our dog on prozac at one time, but it didn't seem to do too much for him.

I would say tht if there is medication to control them then I would give it a try.

I still hestitate to put Audrey on medication because I am not sure that epilepsy is her problem. She has now had 7 seizures in all but she has had none at all when we take her on holiday with us. In April she was with us on holiday for three weeks without any mishap and again for another five days in late May.

I suspect that her problem is related to this environment and if only I could figure out what the trigger is, I could eliminate it.

until a year ago we had a cat who also experienced seizures after mid life. Both animals tended to itch badly before seizures and both animals were kept in the same part of this house.

Two other strange things in relation to Audrey's seizures are that she has begun licking the air in a compulsive way periodically and she has developed an angry rash on her haunches. The rash shows clearly through her fur.

We found out what the trigger was: her food type. Once her food was changed to "home-made" as a majority rather than store-bought she was fine.
