Patty Pan Squash

This may sound like a stupid question, but is the outside of Patty Pan squash edible?

I have a recipe where I boil them until soft (whole) for ten minutes, then lightly stir fry in butter and garlic. It doesn't say whether they are entirely edible, or if I break them open and eat the flesh.

They are about 1 inch in diameter (very small).

Patty Pan Squash is one of the few squashes that you can eat the skin of, similar to zucchini.
