I was unable to find one when I needed one and ended up using a floating heater... we dug the cabling very deep and ran it out to the barrels in the back paddocks. We then covered any above ground cable ( meaning from ground to barrel with pvc piping. We also put that unit on a GFI to avoid any chance of possible electric shock. It would be great if a solar powered one were available.

Canadian Tire sells solar panels in two sizes. Then you have to buy the part that stores (?) the current, like an adaptor, and you plug whatever needs the power into the adaptor. So if you had some kind of floating heater, I guess that would work, although I have no idea how much power the solar panels generate (depends on the weather, I guess, although apparently even strong light is enough) and how much a heater would need to function. I'm assuming you need just enough heat to prevent ice from forming...

Where abouts in Ontario are you? I know in rural areas they have livestock supplies stores that sell them. I know Bowmanville has a store called "TSC" or "TCS" (I'm not sure which) and they sell all that stuff for livestock.

How large does it have to be? Of you recall, I took out my outdoor inground swimming pool and added an indoor model. I still have a solar blanket - could that be cut up for your purposes????

I have a bird-bath heater, which keeps the water from freezing all winter as a result I have all the birds in the neighborhood taking a bath.
It is electric, but so far no birds have been electricuted
