Red Dime Sized Spots that come and go

My Italian Greyhound, 1 year old had these blood red spots on his abdomen that appeared suddenly last week. They look kinda like little bulls eyes. I took him to the vet and they did not know what they were so we did blood tests, he got a vit K shot in case he had gotten into a toxic substance which would make his blood thin and we put him on antibiotics. The spots went away as soon as they appeared. Today they have come back. I have pictures of them but could not figure out how to attach them to this post.

He is just his comical happy butterfly self running around like he always does & he was normal on his walk. We live in the country but I am with him when we are out side. They must not itch because he does not seem to even notice them. Anyone had anything like this with your animals? I am wondering if he has an internal problem. The tests showed all his organs are fine. He had an eleveated white blood cell count. The doctor figured they were some kind of insect bite but now I don't know about that.

I wish I could see what they look like, but from how you describe them, they sound like bug bites. I have a lab/ whippet cross and she hardly has any hair on her belly, so that's the area that the mosquitoes, black flies, etc go for, and it results in big bright red spots on her skin. It doesn't seem to bother her, and it goes away after a day or two. You can buy doggie bugspray at your local pet store to keep the bugs away, just spray it on your hands and wipe it on his stomach and ears.
Once you can, post a picture. we would love to see your beautiful dog anyways!

sounds exactly like bug bites to me too. i'm sort of shocked a vet wouldn't recognize this, and would put your dog on meds though. Sounds to me like you possibly wasted some money on testing and antibiotics for some bug bites. I always think it's better to be safe than sorry, but from your description and judging by my own short haired dog - sounds like ordinary bug bites. my dog gets them exactly as you describe, they come and go fast and are no cause for alarm. (I think it's more noticeable on the short haired breeds, those w/ nearly bald bellies)

They do sound like black fly bites--our long haired dogs get them, too. Since the hair is thinner on the belly, that's where we usually see them.

Elevated white blood cell count? I wonder if the antibiotics were for something other than the bug bites? Has your dog been showing any other symptoms besides the spots?

I suppose it could also be Ringworm what with the bulls eye appearance

Elevated white blood cell count usually indicates the body is fighting an infection.

One of our dogs has had bulls-eyes on the abdomen for the past few summers...they're bug bites in her case, probably ants. Not enough fur to keep the critters out, I guess... They usually show up quickly, by the dozens, and disappear by the next day.
