Kidney Question
Hi everyone, my dog went to the vet yesterday for a physical and his creatine came back at 1.8. His BUN was in normal range and all other tests where fine. The vet said 1.8 is slightly high but not to worry. Does this level mean he is in kidney failure. I will say he was dehydrated yesterday due to it was 100 here. Thanks

I wouldn't base kidney failure on 1 "slightly high" value when everything else is normal, a lot of the diagnosis depends on contributing factors such as age, physical condition, breed pre-disposition to kidney issues or to higher value range, diet and water intake all need to be taken into account.
Anytime there is a concern around the kidneys the urine needs to be tested in order to make an accurate diagnosis. Elevation in creatinine can be caused by a couple of other medical conditions not directly related to the kidneys, as well as simple dehydration or a high protein diet. My suggestion would be to have him retested, both blood & urine, in 3-4 weeks and see what the tests show at that point.

The BUN will typically elevate with a high protein diet or dehydration. The creatinine is a value that you have to pay more attention to.
I definitely think the retest is a good idea. Other things can stress the kidneys and elevate the creatinine, like heart disease or tick disease (lyme). Hopefully the next test will be fine. My boy's creatinine elevated when I added some canned food to his diet once, it was weird - resolved as soon as I removed the food. If he's getting *a lot* of extra meat, he should have some added calcium too. |
