Cats & Butter
I've had many cats over the years and many vets and I've never really gotten an answer to why my cats like butter. Not all my cats have had a thing with butter but each cat at one point or another has gotten up on the counter to rob the butter dish for their dose of butter. Anyone have any idea why? I've always thought it was just a need to replace something their body craves or is needing but my current vet says that's not the case. I've also had some vets say absolutley do not let them have the butter and others say it's no big deal!

Well, butter is made from milk. When my older cats got hairballs I used to always put a little butter on their front paws. They would lick it up. Never had any problem passing the hairballs and they lived to ripe old ages. I think it the every day thing the vets would like you to stay away from.

Understood that butter if made from milk but in my experience most older cats really don't like milk and you'd think the butter consistency would be one that they wouldn't like either.

My guys love milk, butter, margerine, and some oils too. I can't blame them... I like all those things too!

It's the fat that attracts some cats to butter. Butter is actually great for hairballs, so if you have cats that like it, a small amount (1/2 tsp or less) could even be good for them (way better than the crap that's in a lot of hairball remedies).
