Dog stinks like anal glands all the time

Ok, this is gross. Roxy does the butt scoot usually a few times per day. She got her glands expressed a few weeks ago, and she was scooting again the very next day. The Vet Tech that expressed them said they were moderately full, nothing out of the ordinary. She said if a dog needs the glands expressed more than once a month that the glands might get irritated and get infected and cause all sorts of grief. She said if that happens it is usually best to surgically remove the glands.

Roxy stinks like that anal gland juice all the time. Why would this be?

Myka I know that smell and understand why you say gross! it is!

From what I understand from my vet when Winston was quite young was that it is usually a result of food / loose poops. If the poop isnt firm enough to force the glands to release then the dog usually has to try to do it themselves. Are Roxy's stools a bit loose?

The other thing you could try is when she comes in from relieving herself you could give her a quick wipe with one of those wipes. There are some for women that are vitamin e and aloe only so there is nothing harmful on them...just a thought.

Its funny I know that smell distinctly. I was able to tell a co worker with a new puppy that the funny smell her dog was giving off was anal glands and sure enough after a quick vet visit that was the problem....its a unique odor I guess you could say.

Good Luck with Roxy!

Yes, it is a VERY distinct smell! I didn't know that smell until she was riding in the car coming back from getting her glads expressed. WINDOWS DOWN!

She has good poops. She eats Acana Wild Prairie (grain-free) and has Salmon Oil added. When I adopted her she came with a receipt of vaccination from her last owners that showed her anal glands were expressed at that same time which was April of this year. She was eating Iams and a homemade food consisting of mostly white rice and hamburger at that time (she came with food too).

I know some dogs naturally have a problem with anal glands and I do know 1 person that had to have them removed as the dog was constantly having issues with absess's & such.

Her poop can be formed and not appear soft but it needs to be a bit on the firmer side to express them naturally.

I'm willing to bet that there is something in the diet your dog is sensitive too, and maybe something that is missing - one or the other or both.

Hmm, well I can tell you that she didn't stink when she was eating Iams and that homemade food, and now she stinks. Wth? I drove 6 hours home with her when I adopted her and I couldn't believe how much she didn't smell like dog. She wasn't used to being in a car so she was panting, and I couldn't smell a thing. No body odor either. I'm going to switch her back to Iams and see what happens, then I can rule in or rule out the food. Maybe all the filler in the Iams helps her glands express...? If that's the case, then maybe adding pumpkin or rolled oats to her diet would be a good solve...not sure what a healthy long-term solve would be for that.

Roxy has been switched back to Iams for about a month now, and her rash (a whole other thread ugh) is a lot better...possibly cured. However, she still stinks like anal glands, and still scoots.

I am starting to consider surgical removal, but this is a big step, so I'm wondering what I can do with her diet to try to help before taking the leap. That crappy Iams food has enough filler in it, that's for sure! Can I add Metamucil? Pumpkin? Rice? Oatmeal? Right now switching brands of dog food isn't an option as we are trying to work around allergies. Not sure what the allergen is yet, but fish is the biggest suspect at this point.

Roxy was having these same anal gland issues while eating Orijen/Acana and getting Fish Oil added to her diet. She also had her glands expressed in March '11 when she got vaccinated before I owned her (it is on the copy of vaccination papers). So this may be an ongoing issue with her, although I have no way of finding out since she is adopted.

Suspect everything, it could even be something like rice. Rice is a bitg no-no for the dogs that have been here.

Lisa, when she was eating Orijen and Acana the anal gland issue was not resolved or improved at all.

All those foods are very complicated with a lot of ingredients. And if there is a low level infection... Best bet is to do an allergy diet, start with one ingrient, and slowly add one at a time.

Well Roxy is still having gland issues. She scoots once every fews days or maybe once a week, but after she scoots she reeks like anal gland juice and so does the whole room. The house was starting to smell funny so I got the carpets shampooed and the house smells better...makes me think the scooting was the smell. This is disgusting, and I'm fed up. She smells so bad I don't want her around me, but then I feel bad.

I've given up on diet changes...nothing works. She's on Acana Wild Prairie and Platinum Performance supplement. She gets some plain yogurt everyday (this doesn't seem to help nor hinder). I can control her rash by spraying a diluted solution of apple cider vinegar on her paws once a day. Even going back to her old diet didn't clear things up 100%. She always has a runny nose that she kind of blows all the time. Something around her head stinks...not her mouth, not her ears, maybe her nose? That's gross too. Her skin stinks. I've changed shampoos, I've changed laundry detergent (even going to just washing soda), I've changed 5 different foods.

Raw food is way too expensive...it would cost me at least $200 a month to feed her raw food. More if I wanted to buy prepared raw foods. She eats 4 cups a day of the Acana Wild Prairie. I'm tired of this...I just want a non-stinky, happy dog.

When was Roxy's last bloodwork check done? I hear "just kinda stinks in general" and always think kidney issues.

Is it possible that she is grooming herself in that area and spreading the smell into the fur on other parts of the body?

TokyoParrot, I don't have any bloodwork for her (adopted her last July). I do want to get her in to the vet for a full check up including full blood panel. There are so many other things taking up money right now though...

Marko, she's too beefy (not fat) to reach her butt with her tongue as far as I've seen, but that's something to think about. The smell from her face and her skin isn't really the same though. Her skin smells like greasy, outdoor dog that hasn't been bathed in a year. Her face might smell vaguely similar to the anal glands. Hmmm...

If the face smells like the butt.....it might just be what it seems even though it's gross to think about....and if the anal sacs are causing an issue, then licking in that area makes sense to me

I've sniffed her mouth and ears though, and they don't seem to smell.

Ugh...she stinks real bad today. Some days are worse than others. As soon as she got up from her bed and started wagging her tail all I could smell is anal glands. She got fed, and went outside to the bathroom. She didn't poop. She is laying on her bed 4 ft away from me, and all I can smell is anal glands. What can I do to fix this problem?
