Cone Head - alternatives?

Leo, my 5 year old rescued coonhound was neutered on Friday, and was doing great until yesterday when I found that he had chewed out his stitches and had opened up his incision - not bleeding, but requiring immediate attention. We went to the vet and Leo got fitted with his very own Cone collar - which he hates. I'm wondering - is there any foul tasting type of stuff I can buy to put on/around his incision to keep him from licking/chewing it, instead of torturing him with this cone? I'm thinking of trying that stuff you can buy and paint on your fingernails - it tastes bad and helps break the habit of nail biting. Anyone tried that, or something similar, to dissuade him from chewing on his cut? I don't want it to sting hit cut, obviously.

aww look how sad he looks!!
I have heard of something that is like a puffy ring that goes around their neck. I did a quick Google and found this
http://www.bonafido.com/page6.html
not sure where you could get one though. If you were crafty you might be able to make one?

I like these "no-bite" collars instead of the cone: http://www.handicappedpets.com/acc/nobite/index.htm

As for stuff to put on the incision, maybe ask your vet. I know when my cat had a feeding tube and kept licking the insertion site, my vet put some kind of cream on it that tasted NASTY. I have no idea what the cream was called or if it was even intended for that purpose, but it sure did the job. My cat doesn't do cones.

I wouldn't put anything foul-tasting near or on an incision...it's only going to sting. The alternate "cone" (collar-style cone) would probably be your best bet. If you can supervise and have him on leash while you're home to prevent the licking, you can give him a break from the cone.

I also would ask your vet before putting anything on the incision. The No Bite collar that SCM suggested are your best bet or perhaps you can get a human cervical collar and make adjustments.

ahoy

Thanks everyone - from your suggestions, I managed to find an inflatable donut at Petco that is doing the trick AND has made Leo much happier than he was with that stupid cone on his head. See below. Hee hee. And, I think it will double as a life preserver in a pinch!

What an awesome idea and Leo does look a bit more comfortable.

Does Petco sell them specifically as an alternative to the cone? What is the brand name? Do they come in different sizes?

It's called the ProCollar
and yep, comes in all different sizes - Leo is a large. So far it's doing the job just fine.

not authorized

Its says I'm not authorized to post there... but looks like you can post there, so if you want to copy and paste this, you can use it as my "good review" of the ProCollar from Petco:

The ProCollar is a great alternative to the torturous and bulky 'cone collar' and so far, it's working like a charm. If you're trying to decide between two sizes, I'd pick the larger size. Leo seems to fit well in the size large, and he's 75 pounds of pure bluetick Coonhound.

Yeah, I did and it shows me the below message - strange. Maybe I'll try again later? Maybe it's a glitch.

I'm thinking that after Leo is done with using the donut.......he would kindly lend it to you should you need it to sit on for bottom pain one day! That is a great idea...and with many other uses that I can imagine!

I forgot you needed to have 50 posts before posting in that forum.

I think if you pm'd Marko or one of the mods that they would move it over there for you.

Awesome, I'm glad that worked so well for you If Gracie ever needs something to keep her from licking, we'll definitely go that route...she HATES cones with a passion and has destroyed a handful with crazy bucking and freaking out when they've been put on her. Can he paw/pull that one off if he wants (has he tried?)

He hasn't tried, but I think it would be difficult to get off, because you thread their collar through these loops on the inside of the ring, so it's attached pretty securely to their collar. He hasn't even tried to get it off - I think he kinda likes it - it's like a built in pillow for his head!

OMG!! Leo looks just too adorable!!

What an awesome idea! I wish I'd known about this when I was fostering dogs! Each and everyone of them was fixed of course and not a single one liked the cone and it just never worked, or made it impossible to put them in the crate for a day, etc. I have like 8 cones just collecting dust at home now!

I was reading the reviews and it does have many uses..i could see how it would be a great alternative to short legged dogs where the cone would just not do!

Awesome idea! Glad to hear Leo is a happy boy now!!

hmmm...it might stay on...or she might not be inclined to take it off the same way she was with a regular cone. Oh well, hopefully we won't need one anytime soon, but I'm glad to see your boy looking more relaxed and comfie!

I didn't even realize there was an alternative to the cone! I will definitely invest in one of these inflatable ones for future fosters instead of torturing them with an e-collar! I bet kailey wishes I'd heard about these two weeks ago!

Does anyone know of a Canadian supplier for the ProCollar? Looks like Petco doesn't ship to Canada.

Cone versus No Cone Collar (No Bite)

MY doggie had to have three knee operations and when we put the regular cone collar on his he was terrified. It was so big he kept hitting walls, furniture, he felt he couldn't lay down, the collar was having a negative impact on his surgery. We changed to this No Cone collar and it was a huge relief for him. Of course he was still uncomfortable but at least he was able to lay down and could walk around without hitting something and throwing himself off balance. I recommend it to anyone I hear whose dog is having any type of surgery and will need to wear a collar.
