Some new stuff

Here's some new blooms. I have colored ribbons tied on the lily stalks so I can remember what they are after blooming is done because I will be moving some and propagating others this fall.

This is a white version of that wild Malva

A mishmash of all kinds of stuff. Mostly you all have seen already up close.
dark pink Rose Campion (thx 14+!), wild daisies, various lilies, pink Malva, pink Catchfly (thx Hazel!), Mugwort, Valerian, Solomon's Seal, and red Maltese Cross

Some yellow Asiatics. I don't know why these are so short. But they came in a surprise pack I got for cheap at $1 per bulb.

Potato flowers! I thought they were pretty. There's some white flowers, blue flowers and purple flowers. But the purple flower one I couldn't focus with the camera very good.

These are heirloom potato varieties.

Your asiatics are spectacular, CearaQC!!!! I absolutely love that Tinos variety! Very elegant.

The top one is just like mine--musk mallow (M. mochata)! They're not native, but they're sooooo pretty, so I leave them out in the wildflower garden.

I've never seen potato flowers before They really are pretty!

In the group shot, what's the tall orange-red flower at the center top?

Sadly many potatoes available as tuber "seed" commercially have been bred to not flower at all. These are heirloom types that were sent to me by a very very nice man in Ontario for free. He got the potatoes from one of the genetic seed banks in Canada I believe. So these are true heirlooms that they use for breeding new commercial types for blight and potato bug resistance. Names like Earlaine, Cain's Irish Rock, German Butterball. True potato seed comes from fruits at the top of the plants after the flowers. Fruits are poisonous but the seeds can be saved just like tomato seeds and sown. Potatoes contain I think 48 chromosomes and each new seedling is like a genetic lottery, you never know what you will get. So over time anyone can create their own special signature variety potato if they wanted.

The taller one at the back? That's Maltese Cross, a perennial I got in a seed trade a few years back.

They're very pretty, those potato flowers! If we ate potatoes, I'd grovel for some seed!

And the maltese cross is just I love that color! Is the camera capturing the true hue? It looks oranger than most reddish flowers I've seen.

I was supposed to have gotten some true potato seed too but got tubers instead. Not complaining though! There's a man in Washington state, Tom Wagner, who specializes in growing new tomato and potato varieties. But his seeds already have a head start on the process of blight and bug resistance. He doesn't do GMO but just puts pollen from one plant to another the old fashioned way and waits to see what happens with the seeds.

I think the Maltese Cross color is pretty accurate. Depends on the light I think. Sometimes it looks really red and other times more of an orange red. Sun was out for a few this morning when I took the group pic, but cloudy when I took the close up pic last week.

Yep, you really do love your lilies.
I would love some Maltese Cross seeds. I used to have it in a garden somewhere but no more.

Sure thing! They got really tall this year after all the rain we've had.

The angle of the pic is misleading a bit because the lawn slopes down on the side where I took the pic. The flowers in the back left of that bed are between 4-5 feet tall. (Just to give a scale.) The Maltese Cross is in front of the Valerian. Some people only like smaller plants, but I like big giant ones!

I thought the seeds were in little "cups" and brown when ready and you could rattle it? Maybe they are like berries at first and then open up at one end?

Guess we'll find out soon enough. August almost here. Wow the year sure has passed fast!

Has your weather been bad too?

We've had rain, rain, more rain, heavy rain, sunny, cloudy, cloudy, rain, rain, rain, partly sunny. Like only 1 sunny or partly sunny day a week and the rest of the time its cold, cloudy or rainy.

Had absolutely ZERO blossoms on the apples, wild apples and crabapples. Poor deer won't have much to eat this fall. I don't get it. On the other hand it looks to be a great year for wild raspberries and highbush cranberry. Wild blueberry is so-so.

There aren't lots of blossoms around here either. You are right. It won't be a good year for the deer.
I remember having veggie gardens growing up and looking at all the different blossoms of the plants as they started. I thought some of them were kinda neat too.
