Please tell me this isnt true
I just came across this while looking up info on Halo dog food. Did not tell me much about Halo but now Im curious, is this true?
Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain "meat and bone meal" which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by "rendering plants" , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the "soup" and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as "animal fat", the rest of the animals' remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal. You can read more about it here. http://earthislandprojects.org/eijournal... Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5... Here is further information on what you shouldn't see in the ingredients list in your dog's food. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?... 'Tis true, unfortunately. There are a lot of ugly little secrets in the commercial pet food industry. Ann Martin was one of the first to expose how euthanized cats and dogs make it into some pet foods in her book "Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food". Here is an excerpt: http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html

There are also clips on the subject on Youtube. Yes it is true there are pets in pet food. Ive not had a dog for years but knowing what I know now I always advise people I know with pets to understand what goes into their pets.

Where I used to work, there was this lady who had 2 dogs and fed one of them IAMS. She said if she looked at the kibble closely, she could see fur sticking out of it. Yet she still feeds her dog this food! I guess dogs in the wild would ingest fur and the fur could very well be off of a cow right??? I didn't know chickens and turkeys had fur though.

If you purchase a dog food that does not list species specific meat sources, then yes, you could very well be feeding your pet the remains of euthanized animals. And even if the label does say 'beef meal' - that doesn't mean that the beef didn't come from a 3D animal (dead, diseased, dying). That's why it's important to research not only the ingredients themselves, but also the source and quality of the ingredients.
