cat bleeding from nostrils, excessive sneezing
I got home a few hours ago and my cat, Sascha, 11 yrs old and otherwise, in excellent health/vaccinated/fixed etc., just had a humungous sneezing fit and blood was evident in her nostril! She must have sneezed 30 times consecutively, paused, and began sneezing again for another round of 15 or so, and I wiped away a bit of fresh bright red blood. I have never encountered this type of "fit" followed by blood. Yes, she is off to the vet immediately tomorrow a.m.. She has since eaten food, (2 hours since I first saw sneezing/blood, is perky and alert, but is showing some slight discharge from the eyes now. My tennant just walked in and mentioned that Sascha has been sneezing a lot in the last 2 days while hanging out in his quarters. She is very aloof and will disappear in the house for quiet times and I may only see her for feeding times. I fed her this a.m. and noticed nothing unusual or medically amiss.
I am wondering if anyone out there might have an idea what the heck is going on with this cat.....my thoughts are a bump to the head, specifically sinus area, or, severe allegies, but enough to cause bleeding??? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated! She will be seen by the vet in the morning as I am monitoring her closely and if there is a sudden change, we will take her to emerge pronto!

cat sneezing
Well, Sascha has now quit sneexing all together and there is no evidence of discharge from either her nose or her eyes. It's as if there was something stuck, she blew it out and is now right as rain! What the heck!?! She is eating, bright and bouncy and does not show any signs of illness whatsoever. I am keeping a close eye on her and will watch her for any signs of whatever it is/was. Hmmmmm......

perhaps...
She burst a blood vessel while sneezing? Just a thought.

Could she have inhaled something that irritated her nasal passages? Spices, cleaning solution, deoderant, or other strong smelling item? I'm more leaning towards something she could have actually inhaled, like pepper or some other spice.

cat bleeding.....
all of these are possibilities as I have been continually mopping up mud from the kitchen floor with a bit of cleaning solution in the water. Will just use straight water from now on. She also dines beside the spice cupboard, so she may have snooped where she shouldn't have. Boy, it is quite a mystery!

update
Sascha still sneezing, but no blood. Took her to the vet a week ago and he prescribed some liquid antibiotics, (sorry, meds at home, and I can't recall the name) and this is where we start: 2.5 ml orally BID to see if it kills infection if one is present. Only discharge on one side of face from one nostril and corresponding eye, so vet doesn't really think it is an infection or it would affect both sides of nose/eyes. If meds don't work, which they are not, we then try a stronger medication that will infiltrate the sinus bone(s). If this fails, which I have a gut feeling it will, we follow up with an xray to determine if the cat has cancer. The vet named a type of cancer that began with the letter "T" but I cannot recall what it is. Any one have an idea?

Other than the obvious throat cancer which I am sure you'd recall, other cancers that begin with T are T cell lymphoma (which could certainly have as a symptom bleeding from her nose), teratoma (a type of germ cell tumor) - unlikley but anything is possible I guess, thymoma (A tumor of the thymus) - most unlikely and trabecular cancer (very rare and not at all likely).
I reallt hope she does not have cancer! This is one day I am mad as heck at the disease. I am angry with it every day but this really has been a down day. It was a I felt like crying as much as the children I was treating days but I did not have the option. Cats are like the infants we treat - it is so hard for them to tell us where they hurt, sighhhh!! And while I am involved in pain management research in tiny children, it is believe it or not, a relatively new area. In the old days, some ppl actually beleived babies did not feel pain!! And as you know, some idiots feel the same way about kitties! Grrrr!! Anyway -- I wish you well with her!! Last edited by CyberKitten; April 11th, 2005 at 02:00 PM. |

cancer
Thanks for the fast reply! The only one that sounds remotely close to what the vet said is teratoma. I will look this one up. Will take Sascha back to the Dr. this week as meds not working and running low. Might just skip ahead to the xray part and rule that out from the get-go.
Sascha is still eating well, and seems very perky and you'd never know anything was wrong, except for the sneezing fits. And when she has one, it is a doozy! She doesn't seem uncomfortable or out of sorts in any other way....just happily purring and sleeping and climbing around the yard, as usual! Bright eyes and bushy tail!

Sascha
I appreciate all of your concern. Today, Sascha seems even better! Perhaps her meds are kickin' in! She actually licks the stuff right out of the syringe and purrs the entire time. There is no discharge from her eye and not too much from her nose. I will finish off what meds she has and if she has not improved significantly by Friday, I will take her to the vet for round 2. Still has great appetite and we heard no sneezing at all for about 24 hours! Perhaps we are on the mend!!

I will keep you all posted on Sascha's progress. I really hope that the improvement I saw today is a good sign of things to come. I am at work now and will not see her for a few hours, but I don't expect a turn for the worse

Sascha
Well, she is looking better and better! No discharge from anywhere today! And no sneezing that we can hear! Whooppee!! So sorry to hear about your Sammy, Chico2. It is never easy to have to do this, and the only solace I have ever been able to give others is to remind them, and you!, of the years of wonderful caring you gave to your pet. Try to remember the GOOD times and know that you did what you had to do and Sammy loves you for caring, right to the end  .

Cat sneezing and nostril discharge all over again!
Apparently, we have now entered round 2....Sasha has begun sneezing again with a lovely green discharge from her nose.....Just like before, she seems fit as a fiddle other than this sneezing. Back to the vet and I want to try the second med he recommended, as it gets into any possible sinus bone infection/problem. Hopefully this will do it......will keep you posted. Vet closed for the weekend, and I just made an appointment for her Monday morning first thing.....oh dear....

Sasha back on meds
I took Sascha to the vet and he prescibed the same oral medication as last timie. He said not to jump the gun and think about cancer in the sinuses just yet, as the meds worked so well back in April. He could detect no swelling in the sinus cavities or glands and thinks that maybe there is an airborne virus that she has picked up somehow. My other 2 cats are just fine. So, we will treat her as instructed and see how she does!

It sounds like an infection. My friend lost her cat to cancer in the sinus area last year he was sneezing blood really bad, and started to look really bad and not take care of himself, when she took him to the vet she had to have him pts. Hopefully your kittie will recover again.

Cat not doing too well...
Boy is Sascha sick Back to the vet today and he prescribed DeltaAlbaPlex (contains steroid), as she did NOT respond at all to the other liquid stuff. He says it's "all in her head" and her lungs are clear. She is not eating hard food as she is having a hard time swallowing but is happily feasting on the soft stuff
I was up at 4 a.m.,(gonna be a looooonnnnnngggg day...), as she was having a hard time getting into a comfy position that she could breath in, so I had to prop her up for a while She has been having the most amazing sneezing fits, (47 in one session!!) and chokes alot and is continually licking her lips. The vet says if this round of treatment fails, he almost suspects that she somehow has a foreign object lodged in her nasal passage/skull, like a sewing needle or something and we will do an xray then. Could you imagine?? Of course, the pills are HUGE and she feels like she is choking even more when I administer one! Oh boy......

My Godness poor kitty. My KC had a bleeding nose once. I rushed her to emergency, alot of help that was they told me to take her to my regular vet in the morning since she was not bleeding anymore, and charged me $90. I took KC to our regular vet the next day, and it turned out she had a peice of hard food lodged in her naval cavity. At the time I had been dealing with another health issue, which was vomitting. The vomitting is what caused the food to get lodged. She spent the night on and IV, to rehydrate from the vomitting, and they removed the lodged piece of food. Today KC is healthy and all her digestive problems have been cleared up. If you cat is a pukey cat ie hairballs, maybe while puking something got lodged up there. Hope she starts feeling better soon.

I'd give oregano oil a shot. A few drops in her food or water (if accepted) and a few drops in boiling water, then simmered, to put some of the active ingredients into the indoor environment. It's a powerful anti-bacterial.
Sounds to me like an underlying problem (has she ever been outside or with other cats in say, a shelter situation? could be a virus) that expresses itself in opportunistic infections. The antibiotics are only taking care of the infection, not the underlying problem. 47 sneezes in a row! I'd be exhausted, although since sneezing is supposed to stimulate the brain, also a genius. |

That's funny!
I like the part about being a genious I sneeze all the time in batches....that explains things
She is an outdoor cat, (please don't slam me, folks.....). I adopted her that way when she was about 6 years old, from a lady around the corner, so she already had the turf.....hard to change that! Plus, now, she pretty much stays on our HUGE fully fenced property. She's always right there when I open the door or a few yards away. Doesn't stray at all. More of a grass sitting bird watcher. There has been the mangiest male ferral cat in our yard twice. He managed to find the only hole under a gate. The rest is pretty well secure, (3 large dogs, one a husky that can scale 6' fence, we we went 7!). He was pretty gruesome looking, poor fella...all beat up and rough looking. I think he may have possibly brought in some kinda bug. The vet asked this too. But I am mystified as to why my other 2 cats, (one indoor strictly, one yard patrol cat!), have never shown any indication of illness whatsoever This is why I am reluctant to believe it is a virus, although I have not discounted this. I think you may be very right, badger, that this is a symptom and not the real problem. I am horrified to think that there is something stuck in the sinus! Yuck! I like the idea of oregano oil. I work right beside a health food store so that's easy to get. Plus, it'll make the kitchen smell dreamy!! She pretty much eats anything, so this will not be hard at all to give her Thanks for some "sage" (couldn't resist...like to keep things spicy!) advice!!

not doing to well...
Oh dear! Round 3 of meds. Just after I gave Sasha her last pill, BOOM! a huge 37 sneeze fit! Then quiet for a day and then it all started up again.
Called the vet to see what he suggests. He says lets try one more bout of Chloramphenicol as it really seemed to be doing the trick. He thinks that she has a really deep seated viral thing that just didn't have enough meds to kick the "snot" out of it last time, (pun intended ). We will try one more round. After that, it's pretty much likely that she has a sinus tumour, and as you can likely guess, that would be not too likely to be resolved. Keep you posted. I'm gonna keep trying.

This is more of a long-term thing but you might try L-Lysine to boost her immune system. The gel form is probably best - available from the vet and expensive - but you can also get it in pills at the drugstore, which can be ground up and added to her food.
I do think cats have different qualities of immune system, and are more or less likely to pick up something in the environment. I've had both kinds, the ones that catch anything that goes around and others who are exposed to the same risks and never get sick. Good luck to you and your kitty. PS you really have to persist with the lysine. I'd give it to her for several weeks. It is a natural substance and not likely to interact with meds, although you could check with the vet since I'm no expert, only what has worked for me.
